Report: Lebanon 'Demolished Infrastructure’ of Terrorism

Lebanon’s security agencies have been able to “completely eliminate” the basis of terrorism that has terrified the Lebanese in the past years, the Saudi Asharq al-Awsat daily reported on Tuesday.

A Lebanese security source who spoke on condition of anonymity told the daily that “Lebanon has completely destroyed the infrastructure of terrorism,” pointing out to the achievements made by the security forces and noting that 2017 was a “pivotal stage for the agencies’ war against terrorism.”

He said other partners in the fight against terrorism have helped make this achievement, pointing to collaborative efforts between the Lebanese Army, the Directorate General of the General Security, the ISF Intelligence Division “all of which have been directed towards the single goal of eliminating terrorism,” he said.

He added “the infrastructure that supplied the terrorists with weapons, explosives and logistical support was hit hard. They will try and we will remain vigilant and ready to prevent any breach of Lebanese security," he said.

"I can say that Lebanon is among the safest countries in the world today,” the source concluded.

Turning to political rhetoric and its effect on the country’s security situation, he said: “Political stability is not an essential condition in the security process, but incitement should not be part of political rhetoric.

“The Lebanese army and other security forces are able to control the situation, but politicians should also contribute in reducing tension between people,” he said.
