Judge Orders Preventive Assets Freeze of Central Bank Governor

W460

Judge Faisal Makki on Monday ordered the preventive freeze of the real estates and assets of governor of Central Bank of Lebanon Riad Salameh, in connection with a request filed by lawyers and activists of The People Want to Reform the System group.

The lawyers were named as Hassan Bazzi, Haitham Ezzo, Jad Tohmeh, Joseph Wanis, Pierre Gemayel, Francois Kamel and Basel Abbas.

From June 11-13, after the Lebanese pound hit a new low on the black market, protests in Lebanon rallied against Salameh's failure to halt the depreciation.

Do you even care who is behind it? At the end of the day he is not the only one that has led the country in the position it is in but does anyone have doubt that he had a hand in it?!? To be honest i wouldn't like to see one person made a scapegoat, but Salameh is in the middle of this whole mess maybe if he is pressured enough he will start giving people up... wishful thinking i know but u need to start somewhere

Not a fan of Riad Salameh because I think he failed to robustly raise the fact that the clever financial engineering he was orchestrating will collapse absent sufficient income to the Lebanese government. Credit is due him for keeping the system afloat for so long as well as culpability for not ringing the alarm when he should have. Did he steal? Don't know and wouldn't put it past any of our esteemed politicians or establishment figures.
Here's the rub though, we as Lebanese, are failing to admit to ourselves that government is a reflection of the people. We down deep sport the attitude.
October 17 was a refreshing sight of young educated Lebanese of all sects uniting around a common cause. Would that that spirit rises again.
