Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab is scheduled to lead a delegation of Lebanese officials to visit Iraq on April 17,18, media reports said on Friday.

Diab’s trip will include the signing of a preliminary agreement to obtain 500 thousand tons of fuel oil in exchange for health and medical services, al-Akhbar daily said.

It added that after signing, the joint committees will draw up the final agreement in preparation for its approval.

In February, Iraq had agreed to a deal to supply Lebanon with 500,000 tonnes of fuel a year in return for medical expertise.

The caretaker ministers of Agriculture, Industry, Health, Tourism and Energy will accompany Diab during his trip.

They are expected to offer their Iraqi counterparts opportunities for cooperation in various fields, and to discuss the possibility of expanding the cooperation agreement.

This deal is so ridiculous it’s not funny. Iran oil is what we would be getting, in the hope of preventing a backlash against HA

Every cent spent on fossil power is stealing from Lebanese and destroying their health. Not to mention corrupt politicians notably FPM and Bassil. Renewable is now cheaper than fossil power plants. Wind turbines cost has drastically decreased in past five years. Offshore wind is the most cost efficient. What about using one of Tripoli island for offshore wind at a fraction of the cost of power plant. The port needed for service can be also used for tourism (mini Sharm el sheik). Further, a new docking port for large cruise ships bringing each thousands of tourists. Tripoli is perfectly located for cruise itinerary between Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. An island docking is more secured for cruise ships until Lebanon is out of crisis. Part of the island can be developed by cruises. Anyway the main point is offshore wind turbine on Tripoli Island is by far the cheapest energy for Lebanon.

Lebanon with now dwindling import can use its excess ship capacity to import old wind turbine blades from Europe or recycling and get paid for them. Wind blades are hollow fiberglass. Perfect for cutting to manageable pieces and fill them with concrete to land reclaiming near Tripoli Island to create docking areas and port. Fiber glass with concreate can act as reinforced steel and is more environmentally safe than rusting steel. Anyway we would get paid to recycle these old wind blades as many of them in Europe are near the end of their service life. This is a profitable industry we can establish to help Tripoli and Lebanon while making us energy independent.
