Zelensky says Ukraine wants to join EU single market

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday his war-scarred country wants to join the European single market ahead of a decision on whether to grant Kyiv full EU membership.

"For us, a pressing issue is the question of Ukraine joining the EU single market while we're on the way to EU membership status. I'm sure it will happen and it will be one of our country's most important victories," he told a news conference with visiting EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.

The derisive term in US Jewish vernacular is derived from the German Putzfrau, "cleaning woman". I didn't realize that my joke could be taken to have a woman as the putz. I've never heard the term applied to a woman, which is what makes it an insult. The term is to suggest an ineffective person, with all respect to cleaning personnel.

And I'm forgetting that Zelensky is a comedian. His remark about a "pressing issue" refers to his wrinkled t-shirt, and his "one of our most important victories" is his wry admission that his army has been ineffective. I suspect that Ukraine had a reasonably good army but that somebody locked up its generals and disbanded its better units as part of the 2014 CIA coup that eventually led to Zelensky's stand-up routine in the t-shirt. It's good that the US has no enemies in the world, for its forces are on permanent R&R. The CIA: these two CIA agents walk into a bar and order a triple scotch. The bartender shouts, "Get out of here, you stinking bitch!" The agents reply, "But Mom!"
