Al-Rahi says 'winner and loser' approach would lead to national rift

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Sunday said he welcomes “every step towards understanding and consensus over a president’s election,” as the opposition prepares to declare the name of its presidential candidate.

Al-Rahi, however, warned against the so-called “winner and loser” approach between “individuals or the country’s components.”

“This would lead to a dangerous rift in the country, while the unity and welfare of Lebanon and its people are needed,” the patriarch added.

Someone tell Al-Rahi, the French and whoever he met on his last trip, rift is only a threat when the losers are Hezbollah and allies. But have no fear they are whiling to use force or at least a show of force to turn a loss into a win as they've done since 2007. When Hezbollah's opponents are the loser life goes on. A one sided governments no problem, a PM who barely repents himself in his community sure why not, a foreign minister who works for the Iranian foreign minister yes but hey they'll allow him to wear a necktie, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

If he wants unity, he should agitate for the abolition of Article 24 of the Constitution which reserves half of parliamentary seats for Christians. He has Israel's example before him every day of what official racism leads to.
