Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was not able to arrange a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during the U.S. president's visit to the South, ending fierce speculation over a possible summit.

Trump also said he would aim to "straighten out" tensions between North Korea and South Korea as he met Seoul's President Lee Jae Myung for a summit.

"I know Kim Jong Un very well... we really weren't able to work out, timing," Trump added.

Meanwhile, China confirmed that leader Xi Jinping will meet with Trump in South Korea on Thursday on the sidelines of a summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

"As agreed between China and the U.S., President Xi Jinping will meet with President Donald Trump in Busan... to exchange views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest," an unnamed foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday
