Phalange MPs Propose Turning Syrian Withdrawal from Lebanon to National Holiday

Phalange MPs Samer Saadeh and Sami Gemayel presented on Tuesday a draft law on turning the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon into a national holiday.

The first article of the law called for dedicating April 26 of every year as the day of “resistance and liberation from the Syrian occupation.”

This day should be a holiday for all official administrations, schools, and universities, it continued.

The second article called for dedicating an hour at schools a day before the holiday to explain the significance of the occasion.

Saadeh said: “Lebanon has endured several occupations throughout its history and the Lebanese have remained attached to freedom that has been a product of its democratic system.”

He explained that foreign armies remained in Lebanon despite its independence in 1943 and it marked their complete withdrawal in 1946 with a national day.

On May 25, 2000 the Israeli army withdrew from southern Lebanon after an 18-year occupation and the occasion has been marked with the resistance and liberation national holiday, he continued.

“Then on April 26, 2005 the Syrian army withdrew from Lebanon as a result of a military resistance at first and later a popular one after a nearly 30-year occupation and the death of thousands of martyrs,” said Saadeh.

The MP noted that the decision to make the Israeli withdrawal as a national holiday should be applied to the Syrian withdrawal as well “in order to recognize the sacrifices of the martyrs of the whole of Lebanon and their credit in liberating the country.”

The Syrian army withdrew from Lebanon following massive local and international pressure in light of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005.

Finally, someone has the guts to call it what it has always been: a Syrian occupation... "Resistance and liberation from the Syrian occupation"... Oh yeah!

Missing reformist 15 May 2012, 14:50

I like the idea of marking this as a big milestone! But national holiday? Everything would become national holiday... We need to work, produce... It's not as if our economy is doing great! But again please no misunderstanding, it is something never to be forgotten...

Thumb Bandoul 15 May 2012, 16:59

@LameExcuseThrower, why don't you be an honorable citizen who respects the laws of his country by presenting us with the legal document that legitimizes the weapons in the hands of your Party of Murdering Thugs instead of quoting Harriri accepted them? By the way which Harriri are you refering to? The one your party already assassinated or the one your Party is trying to assassinate?

Thumb Bandoul 15 May 2012, 22:58

@Lies&DishonestyThrower, you can repeat the broken record about what HARRIRI said or did until you are blue in the face! SHOW US THE CONSTITUTIONAL DOCUMENT that says the LEBANESE GOVERNMENT legalized these weapons or STFU FOREVER!

7ej tlef w'tdour and never give a straight answer ya nawreh!

if for every 'occasion' we take a day off, add to that the religious holidays of all 18 sects in Lebanon.. when do we work? I suggest that 1 day should mark ressistence, struggle, independence from all oppressors. Maybe Nov. 22nd is outdated. The day we liberated our country from israel, Syria.. we should agree on 1 date to mark both occasions. if wee can not agree on a date, then we settle for Nov. 22 to mark all of those occasions..

It's quite important to know that Syria as a country didn't occupy Lebanon as such; The Assad family from the father to the son were using their clout to subject Lebanon to this agony and turing it from the paris of the ME to a peripheral country bearly catching its breath. lebanon has no problem with the Syrian people; we are brothers and sisters and we all respect each other within the Sovereignty of each country. The lebanese should wait a bit because this day would be gone with the wind once the assad family are deported from Syria which is inevitable. The syrian and the lebanese would look at the day of departure from Lebanon and laugh. The assad family has done more damage to his country and people than he did to us in Lebanon. Therefore, I don't support this day because it would be irrelevant.

I already celebrate independence day on 26 April of each year. It would be nice to make it official.

Default-user-icon AleMTL (Guest) 15 May 2012, 19:40

Shame on you FT you forgot all the sacrifices to get the syrian out of Lebanon, your master Michel Aoun once have even a liberation war against them. We did a national hollyday for ending the "protectorat period" of the french, so why not the syrian, or if you are worried about removing another holliday, just do a holliday that represents all the occupations that lebanon once have (french, israeli, syrian, roman ect ..), so a different date than all others, so everybody will be happy. France, USA they have such a holliday.

Between Religious Holidays, Independance days, and "Idrabet" soon there won't be any days left for kids to go to school :).

As if the Phalanges (who now count only 3 members) or the Ouwet (who are now missing in inaction) who collaborated abban 3an jid with every enemy of Lebanon had anything to do with the withdrawal of the Syrians. How these fakes forget that they trampolined into the arms of every enemy of Lebanon, especially the Syrian occupiers, and schemed against ebn baladon only to have one of them (a genius of farcical proportions) spend 11 precious years underground, frequented by rats and cockroaches only to emerge worse than a rodent with ridiculous predictions to which his superficial followers smile and clap like the retards that they are.

Missing helicopter 16 May 2012, 03:47

There is the independence from foreign armies (that is done) and then there is independence from inside enemies (those with loyalties to foreign entities and or religious bigotry) and there are too many of those. But if the good men and women keep on the good fight, one day our prayers will be answered and we will get the Lebanon that once was.

Both of M8 and M14 are enemies and you follow them like sheep !

Looking forward to enjoy a decent BBQ where you will all be finally put to good use !

Stop following, wake up and realize that you are all brainwashed and controlled ! The moment you do that, you will find out there is much more going on in this world than March 8 / 14 and that the problems that they are fighting over are nothing compared to what lies ahead !

We will all hit a brick wall at 1000km/h because instead of looking straight ahead, the passengers are fighting over the driver's seat, the fuel bill, whether or not to change the brakes, but we're all in this car together and the wall is still straight ahead !

BOOM !

@Lies&DisinformationThrower...you must be a single cell organism because only a single cell organism would dodge the question the way you do. Minutes of a meeting do not constitute the law. You can have all the parliamentary agreements on the planet, if they are not entered into law, all they are is minutes...LOL!

There you have it folks, this is what you get when you try to debate a pathological liar with a deviant personality. Lies upon lies upon lies....Show us the law document incorporating your fiction into reality. You can't can you? Of course not!!!
