Prime Minister Najib Miqati voiced on Wednesday his disappointment with some sides that were hasty in condemning the new parliamentary electoral law, saying that such stands “defeat the government’s purpose of devising the law.”
He said: “The current phase in Lebanon requires us to set aside political and personal interests in order to reach an agreement on the law in a calm atmosphere.”
The premier made his remarks at the beginning of a cabinet session held at the Grand Serail.
“The positions need to bolster democratic work in a manner that would help ensure that the parliamentary elections are held on time,” continued Miqati.
He praised the government for reaching an agreement on the electoral law, saying that it has “culminated in a law that meets the majority of the political positions.”
The cabinet approved on Tuesday an electoral law based on proportional representation and which divides Lebanon into 13 electoral districts.
Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, who had initially proposed proportional representation, said ahead of the cabinet session: “We live in a democratic country and parliament will have the final say on the law.”
“I have performed my duties as the internal minister because all hell will break loose if I didn’t present an electoral law,” he added.
“A substitute will be proposed should parliament reject the law,” he said.
The head of the National Struggle Front bloc MP Walid Jumblat slammed on Wednesday the government’s adoption of a new electoral law in the absence of a single sovereign state that enjoys the decision of war and peace.
In remarks to several newspapers, he said: “The electoral law cannot be discussed calmly in a tense sectarian atmosphere and in the absence of a single authority and a single state.”
Former PM Saad Hariri also slammed the law on Tuesday, saying that it only caters to the interests of Hizbullah and its allies.

when you tailor the law so that you can be reelected, do you expect the other side to clap his hands?
you proved where your allegiances are: with syria and hizbushaitan.
now assume your future.

The problem is not that the law is unfairly advantageous for 8th of march, the problem is that the law doesn't give an advantage to 14th anymore. During the past elections, 8th always had the majority of votes (this is an undeniable FACT), but the minority of seats. Any fair and democratic law would obviously give advantage to whoever has the majority of votes. Now I'd like to hear what the smartasses have to say about this fact. oh boohooo, syria boohoo.

Look who is speaking about laws....the same person who worships and believes in the laws (ideologies) of murderers. There are no laws where you come from. Your law is called Supremacism. Look it up knucklehead.

They want the M14 guys to put aside their personal interests while the M8 guys advance theirs.
Where's the fairness in that? Same as Hezbollah, they want to meet at the Dialogue table, Hezbollah with its guns and the rest unarmed. Where's the fairness in that?
Its the same old story from these guys. "What's mine is mine and what your's is mine."

What is Miqati's future? I think he'll leave Lebanon after the 2013 elections

most probably before :) he will not leave: he will be kicked out with the other traitors to Lebanon.

If we were to set aside personal interests, then I would invite Mr. Mikati to resign immediately because all he is doing heading this defunct government is to serve his own personal interests. His companies are heavily linked to Iran and Syria
