Gemayel: One Day Lebanon Could be Subject to Hizbullah's Domination

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

Head of the Phalange Party Amin Gemayel noted that Hizbullah is taking advantage of its resistance role in order to nibble at Lebanon's geography and sovereignty, warning that the nation could one day come under the party's domination, the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat reported Thursday.

“Hizbullah is trying to eat away Lebanon's geography, sovereignty, the people's interests and rights, and the role of the state's institutions ….one day Lebanon could become subject to the domination of Hizbullah under the pretext of resistance,” said Gemayel in an interview to the daily.

He also warned that any involvement in the Syrian crisis will have severe repercussions on Lebanon's security and stability.

He made his remark in reference to allegations that Hizbullah is aiding the Syrian regime of President Bashar Assad militarily against the people's revolt.

“Lebanon must not involve itself in the Syrian crisis and any involvement could have severe repercussions on Lebanon's national unity, security and stability,” he added.

“The Lebanese people are wise enough not to let the interference of some parties in Syria's affairs drag them further into an internal conflict,” he said, calling on all factions to exercise restraint for Lebanon's sake.

Gemayel added that the Phalange Party will prepare a study on the defense strategy, urging Hizbullah to participate positively and productively in the national dialogue sessions to tackle this thorny issue.

On disputes regarding the adoption of a new electoral law, he said: “The March 14 alliance is keen on reaching an agreement regarding the law, which would also include the Progressive Socialist Party.”

The government approved in August an electoral draft law based on proportional representation and 13 electoral districts.

The opposition and PSP leader MP Walid Jumblat had voiced their rejection to the law.

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun also rejected a draft electoral law suggested by March 14 Christian parties to divide Lebanon into 50 small electoral districts, dubbing it as “political division.”

Most of our politicians should learn a few lessons from ex-president Gemayel.
His message is clear, his concern could be legitimate and he could be right or wrong, that's another discussion but he shows respect and conveys his thoughts without insults which most M8 and M14 figures use on daily basis.

A friend in Europe asked me why do they want Hariri as a Prime Minister.
Is he Competent in Politics ? NO. Is he Lebanese ? No, he is less than anybody. ( He is born In Saudi Arabia and lived there till his father died ). The Sunni of Lebanon surely do have some honest, competent, brave and University Graduates to claim this Ttle of PRIME Minister, in a country that need a lot to be done. Wake up before you go to vote and support someone, and do not ne brainwashed, or bribed.

Thumb thepatriot 11 October 2012, 16:24

@ Profiteurs
Your friend has an opinion only, not the truth. Harriri has a lot of flaws, he was not qualified at first, he got better with time. He is not the ideal candidate, and far from it, BUT, at least, he is a moderate, and a modern man, and he is backed by the majority of his sect in Lebanon. He also carries the weight of the international legitimacy that carried his late father, and can open up any door in the world (refering to your "less than anybody"). Again, he has lots of flaws... but today I do not see another alternative...

One day Lebanon could have been subject to Kataeb domination. One day Lebanon could have been subject to Israeli domination (thanks to Kataeb collaboration). Maybe it is time to try something different. Amin and Samir preach well after endangering Lebanon's geography and sovereignty for decades. The Resistance is not necessarily a pretext for something else. Not everybody wants to grab power the way you tried and failed, Amin. Your Presidency was the darkest hour for Lebanon.

All Lebanese should be able to identify Hezbollah as a main threat to the National identity.
A party that follows strictly the ideology of the Iranian Islamic republic and that is fully financed and supported by the Iranian regime can only serve this Regime's agenda and interests. In Hezbollah's Mission lebanon cannot exist as a sovereign country but should be a part of the sectarian nation imagined by Khomeiny.

I agree with you DANTON : Not everybody wants to grab power the way you tried and failed, Amin. Your Presidency was the darkest hour for Lebanon. Amin the Playboy of his days, not only helped to ruin this country but stole lots of its assets... and doing a huge area as non-edificante area around the Presidential Palace theday he became president and this law is still in lieu, depriving people of their rights of an inherited land from their fathers. Shamefull Man. Mad men are thosewho support him.

At some point in the distant past, the Maronites were dominating Lebanon and eating everything. All the good jobs were devoured by them and they denied all the different sects in lebanon the chance of getting anything. Look now who is talking. I am a greek Orthodox Christian and know full well how things worked in Lebanon. His father also was one of a kind raising the issue of maronatism high leading to Lebanon not becoming a real country. That's why today we have this disintegrated Lebanon.

Hell, no, cheikh Amin. I, like you and all of March 14 patriots with the Western mentality, including Salafis, Wahhabis and the Sunni crazies among us, want Lebanon to be subject to Israel's domination AND WE WANT IT NOW. Look how happy the Saudis, Qataris, Jordanians and slowly but surely the Egyptians AGAIN are. Wouldn't you say so? YES, WE WANT THIS NOW. Hey March 14 patriots, repeat after me: we want Israeli domination and WE WANT IT NOW because only under Israeli domination we are really free. I cannot wait for that day!

Thumb phoenician 11 October 2012, 14:52

The Shiites are 69% of the Lebanese population and they should control Lebanon. Besides Nasrallah said that the Christians came as invaders and that this is originally an Islamic land so the Shiites are taking back what belongs to them.

Thumb chrisrushlau 12 October 2012, 00:20

Naharnet says Gemayel "notes" this. It's nice to know where Naharnet stands on democracy and civil rights, since Hezbullah is already by rights the legitimate government, given that the majority of Lebanese are Shiites, and Mr. Berri doesn't represent them or even want to. Is this rejection of democracy like the Jewish state: a disguised suicide attempt? I'd advise against it, but you know the saying, "Never stand in a man's way."
