The imam of Sidon's Bilal bin Rabah Mosque, Islamist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir, on Sunday stressed that he does not have a problem with the Shiite sect but rather with Hizbullah, calling for coexistence with Christians in the northern region of Akkar.

“Accusations linking Akkar to terrorism are baseless and there is an attempt by some parties to distort the image of Sunni Muslims, especially in the North, because they are hosting the Syrian refugees,” Asir said during a rally organized by Akkar Youth in the area of al-Abdeh.

"We will struggle to restore balance in Lebanon and we will not back down from the revolution of dignity, and we tell anyone betting that things will stay the same that we will continue our path no matter what they say," Asir added.

The hardline cleric noted that he does not have "a problem with the Shiite sect, but rather with the bargainers calling themselves resistance.”

“What do Christians say about the Iranian expansion, as they have entered the cities and encroached upon the culture of Tyre and Beirut. They tried doing so in Sidon, but they will never succeed and no 'yellow flag' will be hoisted in Sidon,” Asir added, referring to Hizbullah's yellow flag.

The cleric also stressed “the importance of coexistence and extending hands to everyone.”

“We must extend our hand to anyone who does not show enmity towards us, especially Christians, as they are the closest to us and we have coexisted with them throughout 1,400 years. But as to those mocking us and looking at us with arrogance and contempt, we will 'puncture their eyes -- in a peaceful manner',” Asir added.

"Why don't they surrender their arms to the state? Till when will they use the weakness of the Lebanese army as an excuse? Is this all a trick aimed at keeping their weapons?" Asir went on to say.

I don't care for his look, but so far i have not disagreed with any of his words. Plus Hizbcocaine needs someone to push back on them from another angle. M14 politicians were doing it, but this is a good development. Now with ASSad falling the Hezz will use every trick to hold onto weapons.

I think all sermons in all mosqs in the country have to be regulated by a moderate sunni/chiite authority. They have to send "auditors" to listen to what the cheikhs are saying in the mosqs to keep the message of tolerance, and make sure stray cheikhs cannot brainwash our youth.

“What do Christians say about the Iranian expansion, as they have entered the cities and encroached upon the culture of Tyre and Beirut.......*** They should reject that as they shoulld reject the Salafi Culture taking over in Tripoli.

WHAT? Puncture their eyes in a peaceful manner (I thought I heard it all, but then I read this).

Other than the above comment I agree with most of his statements.

Why does Sheikh Assir always look like a supernatural behind the podium. Dark shades, body guards, comes up with some crazy looking backgrounds.

Thumb kanaandian 30 December 2012, 22:57

How do you 'puncture their eye' in a peaceful manner?

He will get some paper.
Roll it up so it has a sharp point
Then insert the point in the eye repeatedly

The guy is scary... because we know he's got a hidden agenda. He's also weakening the Hariris.... that's why M8 is letting him roam around lebanon.

Thumb Chupachups 30 December 2012, 23:46

Exactly! .. Plus assir character and personality is much more funny.. Even though I'm skeptical of him

u can tell a leader by his followers. The core of his followers are made up of fanatics, salafists. He speaks of peace, but his agenda clearly lacks just that.

i blame hizballah for not taking the chance to make peace with harriri after may7. Something has to give, we dont want to march to Jerusalem. Im sorry, we just dont have room for armed militias in lebanon anymore.

Sheikh Assir is the next Prime Minister of Lebanon after Miqati, I can feel it.
