Ten people were killed on Wednesday when a passenger bus overturned and burned after hitting a road sign in northern Turkey, media reports said.

Another 29 people were injured, including four critically, a traffic official told news channel NTV. The accident occurred in the Black Sea province of Giresun, the official said, adding that it was suspected the driver had fallen asleep.

The bus, travelling from Istanbul to the Black Sea province of Trabzon, was carrying 43 people, Anatolia news agency reported.

Deadly road accidents are a daily occurrence in Turkey, where respect for traffic rules is minimal.

According to police figures, some 4,000 people were killed and more than 211,000 injured in about 1.1 million traffic accidents across the country in 2010.
