Army Arrests Soldiers for 'Beating, Insulting' Asir-Linked Detainee

The Army Command announced on Saturday detaining several soldiers for attacking an arrested man involved in last June's clashes against the military institution in the southern city of Sidon.

"After viewing a video spread online that shows a number of soldiers beating and insulting a detainee, the military institution has arrested several troops involved in the incident,” the Army Command's Orientation Directorate said in a communique.

The statement stressed: “The Army Command will adopt severe disciplinary measures against those proven to be involved in the attack.”

"We will not disregard any violation of this kind, regardless of where and under which conditions it took place.”

On Thursday, the army also handed over to the military police soldiers suspected of humiliating and beating a man suspected of ties to Salafist cleric Ahmed al-Asir.

The body was identified as Nader al-Bayoumy, whom the Association of Muslim Scholars said had "handed himself in" after the Abra clash.

Eighteen soldiers were killed and 20 others were wounded in the fierce clashes with gunmen loyal to al-Asir on June 23 and 24. Twenty members of Asir's armed group were also killed.

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Thursday 27 people for their involvement in the battles where Bilal Bin Rabah mosque is located.

Ten of them were charged in absentia, including al-Asir and a onetime prominent singer-turned Salafist Fadel Shaker.

what a shame.
this is not our army, this hizbushaitan army.

Thumb geha 06 July 2013, 18:43

yes we do feel for the families of the dead soldiers, but that does not justify inhumane treatment of prisoners.
heads must roll in this hateful army.

Missing helicopter 06 July 2013, 18:54

f.t, HA and the LAF are like day and night. What is seen in the video is HA and Syrian army (Shabiha) practices. The LAF are on higher ground than that and if any elements within them were involved, they did right turning them in. We are proud of our LAF and this is why we want HA to disappear.

Missing freemind 06 July 2013, 22:00

it looks like u r still very obtuse in your reasoning.
OUR ARMY defended civil peace. Get that in your thick head.

Like in any combating army in the world, such isolated mistakes occurred. And as u can see, the army is acting responsibly by arresting the soldiers that acted unlawfully.

Thumb Senescence 07 July 2013, 11:41

Needless reaction by assir. Hope he gets what's comin'.

In the name of all the Lebanese army martyrs, our army must remain disciplined

Default-user-icon Ziad Jabr (Guest) 06 July 2013, 17:32

This angers me to the highest level!!! such behaviour should NOT be tolerated. I pride myself in our army but the rotten apples should be made a lesson off in front of everyone and in public. These people are not human being but animals.

Missing beirutbastard00 07 July 2013, 02:20

Yea I agree n it's good to see them take action.

Armies, around the world, are not trained in public relations. I personally identify more with the shoulders than asirs group.

But my problems are the obvious... Y didn't they investigate the appts? Y aren't they setting up check points in da7yi? Y is the state only strong against any non-Syria aligned groups? ...

Thumb geha 06 July 2013, 18:28

if ever they killed army elements (that is still to be proven, as it is most likely hizbushaitan was firing on both sides) it is no reason for our army to behave like them.
they captured him, then he should be transferred to the judiciary>
unless we are not living in a state.

Thumb geha 06 July 2013, 18:47

I was not Ok then with what US soldiers did, and I am not OK now with what these thugs are doing.
by the way, these are not MY salafis: I hate them more than you can imagine.
but again, once caught, prisoners should be treated humanely.
this is not a farm, this is a state.
this is not a militia, this is supposedly an army.

Missing helicopter 06 July 2013, 19:08

American soldiers got tried, convicted and served jail time. Same should be done with those in the video.
We want Lebanon to be civilized , not like what we see in Syria (HA fighters, Syrian army, and Nusra)

Missing beirutbastard00 07 July 2013, 02:23

Lol no, only in very rare cases do American soldiers get punished for their actions... Especially in Iraq n Afghanistan.

Missing helicopter 06 July 2013, 19:02

Bravo, you and all HA sympathizers are fake defenders of the LAFs. We know where your loyalty is if and when the time comes and the LAF goes to war against HA. Stop faking sincerity.
I am with the LAF when they fight Asir and later when they fight HA (but not for the abuse seen in this video, leave such barbaric practices for HA, and the Syrian army/shabiha).

Missing helicopter 06 July 2013, 19:29

f.t,
If you tell me that you side with the LAF in all cases (including when they go against HA), then we are on the same page.
If you believe committing abuse (such as in the video) should be punished, then again we are on the same page.
The rest of it, whether it is infiltration by HA or simply rage behavior by individuals soldiers is just details and neither of us know which it is. The important thing is proper punishment for the perpetrator(s).

It must be the same group of soldiers that were sent to watch the killing of the SHi3a protester in front of the Iranian Embassy.
The LAF are the only institution left to face HA so Hezb is doing all it can to discredit the army and give it an ugly image so they may prevail.

when Syrian Regime was in our country for 30 years he put some lebanese army leaders related to him like he did the same in the all the departments in our contry , but the big mistake is when M14 take the goverment they didn't change these stupid lebanese army officers

Missing beirutbastard00 07 July 2013, 02:30

I think ur right. During Syrias time, all people in positions of power, were hand picked, or at least ok'd by them.

As for M14 idk wat the hell happened! But I guess it's like I said, all the politicians came through Syria.

Missing roxtox 06 July 2013, 21:09

Hopefully these guys will pay for their inhumanity but I have little faith. Whatever happened to those soldiers who killed the sheikh for not stopping at a checkpoint? I have a feeling these guys will most likely just get kicked out of the army only to join the Hizzies. That's where they can truly practice their hate, because as we know if a Hizzie member kills Lebanon's PM he still gets to walk the streets of da7hy and hold his head up high. How fair is that?

Missing lebanesemafia 06 July 2013, 21:55

That is so wrong to arrest the soldiers how would any of you feel if any one killed or hurt your brother. the army is a family and they did what they should to get who was responsible. The lebanese people need to wake up already. M14 is just putting more gas on the fire.

Thumb primesuspect 06 July 2013, 22:33

Show us the video of the 18 killed & 50 plus injured maimed members' of the LAF committed by Assir & his warped supporters ! Even though I do not applaud this beating, what these soldiers had just witnessed charred & dismembered bodies of their fellow comrades this terrorist was lucky enough to get away with a few cane or two just what a good father would do to his son if he stole from anyone which is called "disciplined " so that his child would not grow up & commit himself into a life of crime like the one we just saw , orouf oruf ourf , where was these murderers' fathers to " discipline " them when they were young before committing an ultimate sin of a deadly crime? Our beloved LAF did not kill him they did ( out of heat of the moment ) what these terrorist/murderers' fathers should have done a long time ago " to discipline " their sons when they were young.

Missing spirit 07 July 2013, 01:01

Our sincere condolences to our fallen Lebanese Soldiers' & to their families as well as may the injured get well soon again , this my friends to all members of the LAF still wear your Uniform with pride & our Cedar atop your head with the greatest honour. May you all overcome evil that is aimed against you, even by some fellow MPs , just like a good father would teach his son, " stand your ground & fight son as long as you are in the right, do not ever turn your back & run away, otherwise you will bring shame to your family ! " in this case to all our beloved Lebanese Army stand your ground & fight for your country with great dignity & pride, 99.9% of Lebanese are behind you all !

Honestly judging by the posts on this site, u would think M14 = anti-Shia. I'm only speaking for myself here, I'm far from M8, but I don't wana be categorized as M14 on this site.

I still believe in 2005. I had never seen so many lebanese flags in my life. How we got here is beyond me. :/

Missing beirutbastard00 07 July 2013, 02:24

Missing formerlebaniz 07 July 2013, 03:57

Really so now we are justifying this because of who these people are? or what happened? We are justifying that the reason any of the Lebanese sympathize with these individuals is because they are salafists? That gentlemen is when Civil wars start.

FACT: No human in their right mind on the M14 would condone the death of the Lebanese Soldiers in the tragic incident in Saida. FACT: No human in their right mind will condone such atrocities committed by the Lebanese soldiers torturing and murdering potential criminals regardless of their origin, affiliation, or purpose.

I beg of you stop this bickering, stop this insane outrageous accusations. You are taking this country down a road no one will be safe in. Neither the Lebanese soldiers murder is condoned nor the actions of those few Lebanese soldiers is condoned either and in BOTH cases people must be punished for their actions.
