Madrid were eliminated in dramatic fashion from the race to host the 2020 Olympic Games after the first round of voting by International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Both Madrid and Istanbul were tied after the first round -- meaning Tokyo topped that round -- and it had to be put to a second decisive vote to see who went out.

Istanbul then garnered 49 of the 94 votes cast to progress and keep their hopes alive of bringing the Games for the first time to a predominantly Muslim country.

Madridf's exit recalled the shock of Chicago's first round exit in the vote for the 2016 Games won by Rio de Janeiro four years ago.

The host of the 2020 Olympics will be contested between Tokyo, host in 1964, and Istanbul in a second round of voting.

IOC President Jacques Rogge, presiding over his final Session before retiring on Tuesday, will announce the winner at around 2030GMT later on Saturday.
