Apple Suit Vs. Google Over Patent Rates Dismissed

A federal judge in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday threw out a suit by Apple Inc. claiming that Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility is seeking unreasonably high license fees for the use of patents on wireless technology.

The suit is part of a world-spanning battle between Apple and Google, whose Android software powers the smartphones that compete with Apple's iPhone. Google bought Motorola Mobility, a once pioneering maker of cellphones, this summer to gain control of its patents and gain leverage against Apple in its court battles.

Police: Hulk's Sister Possibly Kidnapped in Brazil

Brazilian police said Monday they are investigating the possible kidnapping of the younger sister of Brazil striker Hulk.

Authorities said 22-year-old Angelica Aparecida Vieira de Sousa has been missing since Monday afternoon after being left in front of a restaurant in the northeastern city of Campina Grande. A person who was with her at the time told police that he thinks she was kidnapped.

Apple Paid Only 1.9 Pct Tax on Earnings Outside U.S.

Apple Inc. paid an income tax rate of only 1.9 percent on its earnings outside the U.S. in its latest fiscal year, a regulatory filing by the company shows.

The world's most valuable company paid $713 million in tax on foreign earnings of $36.8 billion in the fiscal year ended Sept. 29, according to the financial statement filed on Oct. 31. The foreign earnings were up 53 percent from fiscal 2011, when Apple earned $24 billion outside the U.S. and paid income tax of 2.5 percent on it.

Surgery Seems Best for Heart Disease in Diabetics

New research shows that people with diabetes and several clogged heart arteries fare better with bypass surgery instead of having stents placed to prop open their blood vessels.

Doctors compared the treatments in a study of 1,900 diabetics and looked five years later to see how many had suffered a heart attack, stroke or death. Only 19 percent of the bypass group had, versus 27 percent of those given stents.

Sebastian Vettel showed Sunday he doesn't have to start at the front of the grid to compete for podium finishes — an ability that kept him on track for a third straight championship title.

Vettel's lead in the standings looked to be in danger when he was forced to start in the pit lane behind the rest of the field due to fuel irregularities in qualifying at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. But the two-time defending champion bumped and zigzagged his way up the grid to finish third, just one place behind main rival Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
