Arab Israeli Charged for Trying to Join Syria Rebels

An Arab Israeli student has been indicted for contact with an enemy agent after he went to Syria to join rebels there, the Shin Bet domestic security agency said Wednesday.

Abdel Qader Altallah, a pharmacy student from Taibe village in Galilee who studies in Jordan, was arrested in a joint Shin Bet-police operation on July 14.

U.N. Says Clashes in Golan Have Intensified

The spillover in the Golan from the conflict in Syria has intensified in recent days, posing a threat to U.N. peacekeepers on the scene, a senior U.N. official said Tuesday.

The Syrian army and opposition rebels have engaged in "intense shelling and heavy clashes" since August 17 in a U.N.-patrolled zone that separates Israel and Syria, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, assistant secretary-general for political affairs, said.

Israel, Palestinian Negotiators Hold Jerusalem Talks

Israeli and Palestinian officials held talks in Jerusalem on Tuesday and were to meet again later the same day, Palestinian sources said, just six days after they resumed direct negotiations.

An initial two-hour meeting took place in secret in the morning, with negotiators set to return to Jerusalem's King David Hotel for a "second round of talks" at around 7:30pm (1630 GMT), a senior official said on condition of anonymity.

Israeli Troops Kill Palestinian in W.Bank Raid

Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian and wounded two others during an operation early Tuesday to arrest a Palestinian militant in the West Bank city of Jenin, the army said.

"During the activity, shots were fired at the forces and improvised explosive devices and rocks were hurled at the security personnel, injuring two soldiers," a military spokeswoman told Agence France Presse.

Jordan to Launch 'First Phase' of Dead Sea Canal

Jordan said on Monday it plans to build parts of a project linking the Red Sea to the shrinking Dead Sea that would supply the parched country with desalinated water.

Prime Minister Abdullah Nsur said the $980-million project is designed to provide Jordan with 100 million cubic meters (3.5 billion cubic feet) of water a year.

Thousands of Arab supporters of the Islamic Movement in Israel demonstrated on Saturday in support of Egypt's ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, an Agence France Presse correspondent said.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki lobbied Friday for international help to protect the new round of peace talks with Israel in the face of what he said were Israeli attempts to 'derail' the negotiations.
