IS Claims Responsibility for Deadly Afghan Bombing

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed to have carried out a deadly suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan Saturday that killed at least 33 people and injured more than 100, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said, in what, if verified, would be the first major attack claimed by the jihadist group in the country.

"Who claimed responsibility for horrific attack in Nangarhar today? The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the attack, Daesh (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack," President Ghani said on a visit to northeastern Badakhshan province.

Anti-Charlie Hebdo Protesters Burn French Flag in Afghanistan

Hundreds of people in eastern Afghanistan demonstrated Monday against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo, burning a French flag and calling for the government to cut diplomatic relations with France.

The demonstrators in the city of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, chanted anti-France slogans and vowed to defend Islam after the magazine featured a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed on the cover of its first issue following the deadly attack on its Paris office by two jihadist brothers.

Four Afghan Intelligence Forces Killed in Taliban Attack

Four Afghan intelligence forces were killed after Taliban militants attacked a provincial spy agency office in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Saturday, an official said.

Two men blew up their vehicles in the morning at the gate of the provincial intelligence office and six others then opened fire. The exchange of gunfire continued throughout the morning.

9 Killed in Attack on Indian Consulate in Afghanistan

Suicide bombers targeted the Indian consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Saturday, detonating an explosives-packed car outside the building and killing nine civilians, including a child.

A spokesman for the Taliban militant group immediately denied any responsibility for the attack, which rocked the city and left a mosque, private houses, tailors and other nearby shops in ruins.

Suicide Blast Kills One, Wounds 26 in Afghanistan

A suicide car bomb attack killed an intelligence agent and wounded 26 other people in an Afghan town on the Pakistan border Thursday, officials said, in the latest in a wave of blasts.

The explosives-packed vehicle with two bombers inside blew up in Spin Boldak after intelligence agents acting on a tip-off opened fire in a bid to stop it, Lutfullah Mashal, a spokesman for Afghanistan's national spy agency, said.
