Two years after the dramatic assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, new details have emerged from the closed-door deliberations of the Israeli army’s Intelligence Directorate and the Israeli Air Force.

“In the two years before the strike, this team studied the man to understand his lifestyle and what he was doing at all times. The investigation went down to the most intimate and precise details of his daily routine: when he went to sleep, what he liked to eat, who he usually traveled with. Once you have that amount of knowledge, there is nothing more powerful,” an Israeli intelligence commander told Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

Two years after Israel assassinated Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the group he shaped for decades is “still struggling to rebuild its command structure, military capabilities, and strategic standing following a campaign that systematically dismantled the network around him,” an Israeli media report said.

“On September 27, 2024, Nasrallah made one final choice. According to people intimately familiar with his routine and the security arrangements around him, he had safer places he could have gone that day. Nevertheless, he descended into an underground compound in Beirut's Dahiyeh neighborhood, beneath a multi-story residential building,” Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported.

Hezbollah supporters gathered near the tomb of their late former chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday to mark the second anniversary of his killing by Israel, defiant even as two wars have left the Iran-backed group weakened.

AFP correspondents saw thousands of people, many carrying Hezbollah flags, rallying for the commemorative event in Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold that Israel bombed during conflicts this year and in 2024.

Israel's far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich called on Sunday for the annexation of areas of south Lebanon and the Gaza Strip currently under Israeli military control and for Israeli forces to "go to war" against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

"I would like us to annex at least as far as the Yellow Line in Gaza (which demarcates the areas under Hamas and Israeli control) and as far as the Litani River in Lebanon... because if a war ends along the same lines where it began, what will deter the enemy from going to war again," Smotrich said in a podcast for Israeli news site Ynet.

The Free Patriotic Movement on Sunday hit back at Hezbollah official Nawaf al-Moussawi after the latter criticized FPM chief Gebran Bassil over recent statements.

"We thought that a former MP and official like Nawaf al-Moussawi would be expected, first, to adhere to the limits of politeness and decency in expression, and second, to listen well and comprehend correctly before commenting erroneously," the FPM said.

The Israeli army said Sunday that it attacked infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah overnight in response to an explosive-laden drone launched towards its forces in the so-called security zone in south Lebanon.

Noting that the attack caused no injuries, the Israeli army said it responded by launching airstrikes against "Hezbollah targets" in several areas of southern Lebanon..

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam insisted at the U.N. on the need to "avert the vacuum" that would be caused by withdrawing the peacekeeping mission deployed in the country's south without a viable replacement.

Under U.S. pressure, the U.N. Security Council decided last month to fix December as the end of the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has been deployed since 1978.

MP Hassan Fadlallah of Hezbollah on Friday snapped back at Free Patriotic Movement chief Gebran Bassil over recent remarks criticizing the Iran-backed group and the recent wars it has fought.

“Lebanon is in dire need today of honesty, loyalty, and words that unite rather than divide -- a national discourse free from incitement and deception. These qualities have been lost among many who disowned the most fundamental values of loyalty and allegiance to a single homeland, bargaining them away for the cheapest price,” Fadlallah said, apparently referring to Bassil.

In southern Lebanon, eight-year-old Yara Ajami started the academic year this week in a doorless, windowless classroom after her school was destroyed by an Israeli strike.

Well known in the area for its excellence, Ajami's elementary school in Burj Qalaway was struck by Israel in May.

President Joseph Aoun praised the army on Monday for defending all Lebanese, including those standing against it. "You defend all our people, even the very few who stand against our homeland and our state," he told army personnel.

"Your weapons are the only legitimate weapons — not by force, nor under anyone's guardianship, but by the trust of all the Lebanese in you and you alone," Aoun added, emphasizing that the people's trust "is the most important and powerful weapon."
