Officials and spiritual leaders condemned on Tuesday a deadly attack that targeted three soldiers in the town of Wadi Hmeid in the eastern border town of Arsal, considering it as an attempt to create sedition in the country.

President Michel Suleiman called for striking with an iron fist all those who attack the army and security forces.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri contacted on Sunday Speaker Nabih Berri in order to discuss the latest developments, including the Mar Mikhael blasts in Beirut's southern suburbs.

He said in a statement: “It is not enough to condemn strife during such attacks, but national responsibilities require all leaderships to warn those seeking unrest to halt their attempts to weaken and replace the state.”

Al-Mustaqbal Party leader Saad Hariri stated on Saturday that Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah is demanding the recognition of the “State of Hizbullah," considering that the resistance has announced its “suicide" in the Syrian border town of al-Qusayr.

“You have announced yourself the end of the resistance on Liberation's Day,” Hariri addressed Nasrallah in a released statement in which he responded to Hizbullah leader's speech in the commemoration of the liberation of the South earlier on Saturday.

Saudi King Abdullah expressed hope that Lebanon would witness stability and prosperity, calling on the Lebanese to preserve their country and maintain coexistence in it.

Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awadh Asiri conveyed the King's message in a dinner banquet held at his residence in Yarze on Friday eve for current and former premiers.

He wondered in a statement: “Where is the national, constitutional, and moral responsibility towards the crime being committed by a major Lebanese faction through meddling in the internal Syrian war?”

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Friday “categorically” denied a media report claiming that he had proposed to Speaker Nabih Berri to exchange the extension of parliament’s term with the so-called 8-8-8 cabinet line-up formula in addition to the rotation of portfolios.

A report published Friday in As Safir newspaper said should Berri reject the alleged deal, al-Mustaqbal Movement would refuse to extend parliament’s mandate and would submit the nominations of its candidates as of next Monday according to the 1960 electoral law.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea stated on Wednesday that the party had from the beginning of discussions over a parliamentary electoral law sought an agreement over one that garners the support of all sides, stressing that it never pledged to adopt the Orthodox Gathering law.

He said during a press conference: “The Orthodox proposal never had the chance to succeed.”

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat held talks on Saturday with former Prime Minister Saad Hariri on the latest developments in Lebanon and the region.

They addressed efforts to form a new government and reach an agreement on a new parliamentary electoral law, announced Hariri's media office in a statement on Sunday.

Lebanese Force chief Geagea and al-Mustaqbal movement leader Saad Hariri have discussed the electoral law during a “lengthy phone conversation,” Geagea's press office said Tuesday.

Geagea and the former prime minister “held an extensive discussion on the latest developments on the electoral law,” it said.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stated that the political powers “without exception” can reach an agreement over the hybrid parliamentary electoral law, while voicing his disappointment with Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's latest speech, reported As Safir newspaper Friday.

He told the daily: “The hybrid law can help ease the political and religious monopolization of power.”
