Two-time winner Rafael Nadal and British hope Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon second round, but Australia's men slumped to their country's worst performance since 1938.
Nadal, fresh from a record-breaking seventh French Open win, enjoyed a 7-6 (7/0), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci despite having trailed 4-0 in the first set.

Having swept past France to reach the Euro 2012 semifinals, Spain can expect a more exacting ordeal on Wednesday when they face a Portugal team who beat them 4-0 in their last meeting.
Spain have largely held the upper hand against their Iberian rivals, losing just nine times in 37 encounters, and they edged Portugal 1-0 in the last 16 en route to their triumph at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Coach Joachim Loew has said Germany will give no thought to avenging their 2006 World Cup defeat at the hands of Italy when they face the Azzurri in Thursday's Euro 2012 semifinal, confirming that Bastian Schweinsteiger will be available to play.
Schweinsteiger has complained of a lingering ankle injury and had raised doubts about his fitness.

Dalma Rushdi Malhas, tipped to become a pioneering woman competitor for Saudi Arabia at the London Olympics, has in fact failed to qualify and won't compete, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) said Monday.

Ryan Lochte downed Michael Phelps in the men's 400m medley at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in a race that gave a glimpse of the fireworks they could produce at the London Games.
Lochte seized control on the breaststroke leg and held on to beat Phelps for the first time in the punishing four-stroke event.

Roger Federer swatted a stray ball toward a ball girl but misjudged the distance, and his leisurely lob bounced past her and over the backstop into a photo pit, drawing titters from the Wimbledon crowd.
Federer's first-round match was a laugher. Aside from the errant lob, he had few lapses and drubbed Spaniard Albert Ramos with stylish symmetry Monday, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has won his opening match at Wimbledon by beating former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay served notice they will be ready to challenge Usain Bolt at the London Olympics in the 100 meters after qualifying for the Games with impressive times.
Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion who could not defend his crown in Beijing while serving a four-year doping ban, won the 100 final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in 9.80 seconds, the third-best time in the world this year.
