11 Killed in Syria Violence as Blast Rocks Mezzah Military Airport

Two civilians were among at least 11 people killed in Syria on Saturday as U.N. observers monitoring a shaky ceasefire toured the restive city of Homs, a monitoring group reported.

The report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights came as the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to dispatch 300 observers to Syria for a 90-day period to help bolster an April 12 truce.

UNHCR Says More than 22,000 Syrian Refugees in Lebanon

Nearly 22,000 Syrian refugees had fled the crackdown in their country to Lebanon according to a report issued on Saturday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to the report “the UNHCR and its NGO partners are working in cooperation with the (Lebanese) government, local authorities, and international agencies to aid more than 22,000 Syrian refugees across the country.”

Syrian National Council Calls for U.N. Military Intervention

The opposition Syrian National Council renewed on Saturday its call for the United Nations to intervene militarily in the country to put a stop to "crimes" by President Bashar Assad's regime.

"We call anew on the U.N. Security Council to act with all urgency to intervene militarily to bring an end to the crimes committed by the bloody regime against the unarmed Syrian people," said a statement received in Beirut.

SANA: Syria Frees 30 Detained over Unrest

Syria has released 30 people who were detained for their alleged role in an anti-regime uprising, but who have "no blood on their hands," state media said on Saturday.

The move takes to nearly 4,000 the number of people who have been released by the authorities since November, after they had been taken into custody for the same reason, news agency SANA reported.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Friday said that it would likely contribute observers to the U.N. mission in Syria.

"I think OIC countries will contribute to the observer (mission) to be sent by the U.N.," OIC head Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said in Libreville during a meeting of information ministers of the 57-member pan-Muslim body.

U.N. Awaits Syria Green Light for $180m Relief Plan

A $180 million draft plan for delivering humanitarian aid for Syria's one million needy has been drawn up and is awaiting the green light from Syria, the United Nations said on Friday.

Juppe Says U.N. Observers Should Ensure Right to Protest in Syria

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe declared on Friday that the U.N. observer mission in Syria needs to be able to guarantee Syrians the freedom to protest against Bashar Assad's regime.

"We need observers on the ground, but properly equipped observers with helicopters that can ensure the right to protest. It's extremely important. The day this freedom is guaranteed, the regime will not stand," he said.
