France, Russia, U.S. Identifying Syrian Officials for Talks

France, Russia and the United States are trying to draw up a list of Syrian officials with whom the opposition can negotiate, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Tuesday.

"We worked together on an idea... of a list of Syrian officials who would be acceptable to Syria's opposition National Coalition," he told the foreign affairs committee of the National Assembly.

Russia Evacuates 100 Citizens from Syria

Russia's emergencies ministry on Tuesday airlifted 103 Russians and citizens of former Soviet republics from Syria amid continuing violence in the strife-torn country, news reports said.

The Il-62 plane left from Latakia airport in western Syria where President Bashar Assad enjoys his strongest support at 1440 GMT, news agencies quoted a ministry spokeswoman as saying.

Mustaqbal Urges Suleiman to Act over Mansour Stance, Hizbullah 'Interference' in Syria

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday urged President Michel Suleiman to act in order to spare Lebanon the “consequences” of Hizbullah's “participation” in the Syrian military conflict and the controversial remarks voiced by Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour at the Arab League.

In a statement issued after its weekly meeting, the bloc also “strongly condemned the remarks voiced by Hizbullah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem, who confirmed once again the participation in combat alongside the Syrian regime and admitted arming and training gunmen fighting in Syria.”

Syria to Buy Civil Aircraft from Ukraine

Syria will buy 10 civilian aircraft from Ukrainian manufacturer Antonov for its state-owned airline, the official SANA news agency said on Tuesday.

"Cabinet has approved a contract between Syrian Arab Airlines and Ukrainian manufacturer Antonov for the purchase of 10 civilian aircraft, in a bid to strengthen Syria's fleet," SANA said.

Russia Flies Food Aid to Ally Syria

Around 10 tonnes of Russian food aid and blankets arrived Tuesday in Syria, where an uprising against the regime of Moscow ally prepared to enter its third year, state news agency SANA reported.

"A Russian plane landed at Bassel Assad airport in (the coastal province of) Latakia on Tuesday, carrying 10 tonnes of food aid and blankets," said SANA.

Israeli President Shimon Peres, delivering an historic address to the European Parliament, on Tuesday called for Arab League intervention in Syria "to stop the massacre".

Syria's army could go on fighting "for years" rebels trying to overthrown President Bashar Assad, a pro-regime newspaper said on Tuesday, adding however that citizens could join according to their capacities.

U.N. Says Whole Generation of Syrian Children Could be Lost

A whole generation of Syrian children risks being lost amid the spiraling civil war in the country, the U.N. children's agency cautioned Tuesday, saying it was in urgent need of funds to address the crisis.

"Millions of children inside Syria and across the region are witnessing their past and their futures disappear amidst the rubble and destruction of this prolonged conflict," UNICEF chief Anthony Lake said in a report published two years to the day after the Syrian conflict began.

Obama Meets Arab-Americans Ahead of Mideast Trip

President Barack Obama on Monday, just days ahead of his Mideast trip, met with about 10 leaders of Arab-American groups who encouraged him to deliver a message of hope to the Palestinian people even if he is unable to immediately deliver a peace plan with Israel.

Rebels, Syrian Army Locked in Fierce Battles in Homs, Damascus

Syrian rebels and troops fought fierce battles over a keenly contested neighborhood of Homs on Tuesday, as fresh clashes broke out on the road linking Damascus to its international airport, a watchdog said.

The fighting in Homs was focused on the Khaldiyeh district and comes one week into a massive army and pro-regime militia assault to reclaim rebel districts in the central Syria city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
