U.N: West, Central Africa in One of Worst Cholera Epidemics

The west and central Africa region is facing one of the worst cholera epidemics in its history, with over 85,000 cases reported leading to 2,466 deaths this year, the U.N. children's agency warned Tuesday.

"The size and scale of the outbreaks means the region is facing one of the biggest epidemics in its history," said a UNICEF spokeswoman.

Rocket Attack on Pakistan Governor Meeting, Six Wounded

At least six people were wounded but none were killed when rockets struck a meeting of tribal elders convened by a provincial governor in northwest Pakistan Tuesday, senior officials said.

Senior administration official Sahabzada Anis corrected his earlier statement that one person had been killed when militants apparently perched on nearby mountains fired rockets on the gathering in Kalaya town of tribal Orakzai district.

Italian Vessel Hijacked by Pirates Off Somali Coast

An Italian vessel carrying 23 crew was hijacked by five pirates about 620 miles east of the Somali coast on Monday, the D'Alesio shipping company said.

The owners of the M/V Montecristo said the crew comprised Italian, Ukrainian and Indian nationals, adding it was "actively collaborating with all the related Italian and international authorities to respond to the emergency."
