the orthodox law isnt ideal, that's for sure, but between a sectarian law where christians are barely represented because they are spread all over lebanon and their votes are diluted in each district (contrarily to shias and sunnis who each have their electoral strongholds)
and the orthodox law which is still sectarian but at least gives christians their fair share of representation, i'd chose the second.
under the orthodox law future movement would lose a lot of MPs this (if they have 70% of sunni votes, they'd get 70% of 27 seats = 18 or 19 seats instead of their current 26) so i understand they are against it
however the LF and kataeb would gain from this, LF for instance currently has 8 MPs, of which only 4 were elected by the LF base (the other 4 obtained through future movement votes). under the new law they can expect about 15 MPs, so i cant see why they wouldnt be in favor of it.
i agree with you, we should go towards a fully secular governance, but i think it's premature to expect this today, we still have a long way to go in terms of mentality before this becomes possible...
joseph maalouf and tony abu khater were elected in zahle, where 27% of voters are sunnis. under the current law future movement could "grant" them the victory, but under the orthodox law they wouldnt be able to secure their seats.
maybe they feel they "owe" FM some loyalty since they were elected by the FM, who knows..
but the LF would have twice as much MPs under the orthodox law without "owing" anything to anyone, so as a party their interest is very clear.
