Free Patriotic Movement MP Ibrahim Kanaan hailed the agreement with the Lebanese Forces on the nationality draft-law as a “step in the right direction,” reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Wednesday.

He explained to the daily: “This issue is not about the FPM, LF or even Christians, but it serves national strategic interests by bolstering Lebanese capabilities through its expatriates, who are spread throughout the world.”

“The agreement is the culmination of coordination between the FPM and LF after they signed the Declaration of Intent” in June, he added.

“The agreement will be followed by other steps in the future that will benefit the Lebanese, especially Christians,” revealed Kanaan.

The LF and FPM signed on Tuesday a draft-law on allowing expatriates to regain their Lebanese nationality.

They hope to include it on the agenda of an upcoming legislative session.

The parliament bureau, which had convened on Tuesday to address the agenda, had however failed to include it.

It is scheduled to hold another meeting next week.

The LF and FPM had intensified over the past week their contacts in order to reach a joint vision over the agenda of the legislative session.

Caporal has always rejected to allow Lebanese abroad from voting in elections. Christians abroad in their vast majority consider the Caporal a traitor.

if the expatiates can vote, then the 10 million Lebanese diaspora of 1st and 2nd generation Lebanese can vote. 80% of which are Christian. This will heavily tip the balance into christian favour. Problem is, the diaspora don't give a crap anymore! Many are ashamed to be Lebanese and the only interest is to maybe visit one day as a tourist. damage done... too late idiots
