Reports: Assad ‘Personally’ Intervened to Fund STL

Syrian President Bashar Assad personally intervened to persuade Hizbullah to fund the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, revealed the Kuwaiti al-Seyassah daily on Saturday.

March 8 circles told the daily that the Syrian president sought to fund the STL in order to preserve Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s government because the Syrian regime considers it as a “necessity.”

To this end, Assad recently held talks with Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Health Minister Ali Hasan Khalil in a meeting that lasted three hours, they continued.

These talks were preceded by high-ranking Iranian contacts, they added.

The daily said that Khalil spent two days in Damascus to discuss the issue of the funding, as well as other issues related to some Lebanese officials’ positions on the Syrian crisis.

Miqati announced on Wednesday that he transferred Lebanon’s share of the funding of the tribunal to the court, while Nasrallah on Thursday rejected the funding, renewing Hizbullah’s opposition to the tribunal.

The party has deemed the STL an American-Israeli product aimed at destroying Hizbullah.

As time passes by, I am more and more ashamed of being a Lebanese. Just hearing that people outside of Lebanon dictate what or what not to do turns my stomach upside down. Assad has intervened or Nassrallah has ordered is a shame that we as Lebanese are to blame for. When is it going to be the case for us to behave like normal regime basing our decision on what's best for Lebanon and not what's best for Iran and Syria. We have lost the sense of self worth and the ability to be proud to be Lebanese. We are the highest educated people in the Arab countries and yet we behave like illerates.

When is the time to start acting like a respectable nation?

Only God could chnge our way and lead us to rationality and self-worth!!!

As I said it before
Basher needs Lebanon sanctions free to survive - it is his only lifeline in view of the blockade being imposed on him
Not funding the STL would have subjected Lebanon to same blockade.

This is an old story. When it first came out a couple of weeks ago, the report was similiar, but the following day, Hezbollah denied that the story was true or even that Assad had met with Hezbollah representatives.

Now, to save face, Hezbollah is claiming the story to be true so as to take credit away from Mikati for approving the Lebanese share for funding for the STL and place it with their patron, Assad.

What is the truth? Apparently for Hezbollah it is a commodity that can be bought and sold depending on whether there is a demand for it.

With the Hezz in charge everything is run by Syria and the evil Persians.......but not for much longer.

After telling Lebanon to fund the court, they had to come up with a plan that didn't include a vote so the Hezz and Aoun wouldn't look like hypocrites. So the plan was just to let the PM act on his own illegally, just like in Syria.
