Disabled Man Left Homeless after Collapse of his Zgharta House
A disabled man and his sister have been left homeless after their house in the village of Bou Seet in Zgharta collapsed on Sunday, reported the National News Agency on Monday.
A local resident told NNA that the sound of falling rubble was heard at around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday prompted him to head to the scene where he found the collapsed building.
The residents were having lunch at a nearby house therefore miraculously escaping the accident.
The two-storey house and its furniture were destroyed, added the local.
Fears have since arisen in Bou Seet that other buildings in the village may also be under threat of collapse, said NNA.
On Monday, nine people from two families also escaped a collapse in their house in al-Minieh in northern Lebanon.
They said that as they were watching children play near the house, they heard a strong noise from within the building.
Heading inside, they found out that part of the roof had fallen, causing great damage to the bedrooms.
Cracks have also emerged in the dining room.
The families called on the government to take immediate action and send experts to inspect the building, demanding that they be provided with an alternative house.
This is the latest of series of building collapses that have been taking place in Lebanon in recent weeks.
On Friday, the front of a building in the Beirut district of Bourj Hammoud collapsed, damaging nearby parked cars, while on Wednesday a wall in the town of al-Hallousiyeh in the Tyre district in the South also crumbled.
Prior to that a vacant building abutting a structure that collapsed in the coastal town of Tabarja, north of Beirut almost two weeks ago tumbled down on Tuesday.
The first building collapsed on March 9, killing an Indian worker and injuring seven others.
On March 17, three students were killed and seven others injured when part of a cliff collapsed at the Bhanine school in the northern Minieh-Dinniyeh district.
The series of collapsed buildings began in January in Beirut’s Ashrafiyeh neighborhood when a collapse left 27 people dead.
