Energy Minister Jebran Bassil revealed on Wednesday that the Greek construction group J&P-Avax and the U.S. industrial group General Electric won the Deir Ammar tender.
“We will start producing 841 megawatts instead of 750,” Bassil said during a press conference.
The minister had expressed optimism earlier in comments published in As Safir after the cabinet approved the results of a tender, which was organized to rehabilitate the Deir Ammar power plant in northern Lebanon.
He reiterated that he is “committed to provide the Lebanese with 24 hours electricity in 2015.”

“The Lebanese must believe that the electricity crisis isn't complicate... We will restore electricity to the country,” Bassil told reporters.
The cabinet that convened on Tuesday approved the results of a second tender over the rehabilitation of Deir Ammar after the first tender was canceled over disputes with the company that won it.
Lebanon has long suffered from electricity outages because of shortages at its power plants whose maximum capacity is less than 1,500 megawatts but the country’s actual need exceeds 2,300 megawatts.
Concerning the controversy of the new electoral law, Bassil rejected in his comments to As Safir that the adoption of a hybrid draft law that combines the winner-takes-all and proportional systems.
He considered that discussing a hybrid electoral law is a “waste of time” as it will not be approved.
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat and al-Mustaqbal movement are mulling the possibility of adopting a hybrid electoral law to replace the so-called Orthodox Gathering proposal which was approved by the joint parliamentary committees.
The Orthodox proposal, which considers Lebanon a single electoral district and allows each sect to vote for its own MPs under a proportional representation system, was rejected by President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Najib Miqati, Jumblat, al-Mustaqbal bloc and the March 14 opposition's Christian independent lawmakers.

loooooooooooooooool ..i wonder how much cash this thief has in his bank account..they should hack him ..and post it on national tv

always baseless against FPM, but you are immediate in the accusation of other parties
type hypocrisy of M8

baseless? you remember the contract that magically shed millions after Mikati pointed to this thief's commissions, hell even al akhbar was outraged

Thank you mowaten, after all by now you should be a PHDed expert on "baseless accusations"! You see I was always fond of the "proven grounded worthwhile" accusations by your fellow honorable "patriots". Especialy the claims of corruption and embezzlement leveled at Aoun for fifteen years by the Adnan Adoums, Jamil Sayyeds, Qawmis, Baathists, Amal, HA, Naserites, Communists and assorted Palestine first, Arab nationalist MPs, Journalists and Lebanese other Syrian officials. And the accusations directed at Rafic Hariri by those same caricatures whenever he called on deploying the Lebanese army to south Lebanon or when he suggested the Aoun should return to Lebanon, including the last time he did it from Bkerke shortly before he was blown up.

@rude 7ayete , even if i do charge by the hour ..u still cant afford heheheh...but wow am so happy that i have a fan ..finally..cause it seem u came to the page just for me looooooooooooool...it seems bassil is paying u very well for the hour lol..i hope it doesnt hurt looool

and what happened to the ships ...still waiting and we will wait for a very long time for this idiot to tell us the truth

The "way of thinking" and prejudgement that you criticize is also inbuilt in you too...so it's good to criticize other but I wish you cold do some self-critic too...If M14 and M8 fans do this our state in Lebanon will significantly improve.

whether you like him or hate him, if we get 24/24 electricity in Lebanon by 2015 then well done Bassil! fingers crossed!

Exactly, not at any price. Already people in Lebanon are paying 200.000 LL for 5 amperes. My family pays 400.000 for 10. Additionally the regular EDL Electricity bill.
In the small European country which isn't cheap, I pay 75€ per month for electricity (light, water boiler, appliances) and gas (heating, cooking) combined. And if I lived in France or germany I'd pay much less.

Anonyme, I only voted once and that was in 2009.
Mowaten. This is the prices they charge in Saïda. Well at least in October when I was there. Moteur 21h/day... Dawlè 3h/day.
In Beirut, in my appartment I have dawlè 21h/day.... Just the opposite. No ishtirak since its illegal unless it's owned by the building. My monthly bill is something like 7000 L.L heh!
Walla 7araam for the people. Everyone is getting ripped off.

You guys it is not about Bassil. Evry individual in power will profit from jobs such as this one. So yes Bassil is probably getting some extra cash but so are the rest of them. If their salary does not exceed 10000$ per month how do they become so rich all of a sudden? It's a no brainer. I guess there are ways to do it. Anyway just like Lebneneh said: If Bassil manages to get us power 24/7 in 2015 then good job but i doubt it lebneneh.

It is great to read such articles and news. Who cares if its Bassil or Abou Ali who whoever.
But the second part of the article ruins an otherwise optimistic read with the election law BS, who said what and who is right or wrong. People are sick of such cheap arguments. Let's move on and repair the electricity grid, drill for gas and oil, upgrade the telecommunications network, build a capable army.

Weren't they set to arrive in April FT? Actually only one of them is set to arrive in april. This ship will only provide us with 700 megawatts. Expect to live in the darkness for quite some time.

FT
Can you please name the energy ministers from year 2000 to now?
that should help us know who didn't do his job for the last decade and more.

Can you please name all the energy ministers from 2000 to present ?
that should help everyone know who exactly wasn't doing his job.
(why naharnet is not posting this question ? this is the third time).

Do you ever review what you write before you post it? If you do that and still post I wanna know what you are on ... cause that shit it great! you seem to decide to forget that all the ministers that took over the enegry sector were either your bosses or their lapdogs, so who are you really blaming here? They have controled the country all the time but it seems they were able to negotiate better deals for themselves, or did not feel obliged to share with others, this time which is why things are moving better. They are all crooks ... just don't defend this idiot ... u ook like an idiot doing that!

J&P is a Greek CYPRIOT company and not a GREEK company. I know this for a fact because I worked for the company for 5 years! It seems Mr. Bassil doesn't know the difference!

I think for once this is news of something positive. Hopefully the gov continues to invest in this problem until there is 24 hr electricity. Yes, the cost might be higher but how can we build a strong economy on instability.
Now back to the Orthodox law (insert finger in mouth), I think I found a personal solution to this stupidity. I will convert to the sect of the politican(s) I find the most appealing.

in civlized nations, people worry about the price they pay for energy, in uncivilised nations they worry about getting it at any cost. Lebanon is a banana republic... the current way for producing energy is wrong, it should be renewable... clean. Beirut's atmosphere is already unbreathable.

can anyone of you guys name all the energy ministers from 2000 to now ?
at least this way we know who to blame for lack of electricity for all these years.

J&P is not a Greek company. It's a Cypriot one. I wonder how much cash this thief has pocketed. Hizbullah asked Aoun to eat as much as he wants in return for him to free the hands of its armed forces. These two will end Lebanon for good.

Yeah, aounis should talk, nobody plays the blame game as good as you retards do.

The subject is about energy so I will stick my comment to that only, so we let's say we produce 850mwatts, electricity is restored to 24hrs, all is good and thank you to those who pay/paid for this economic growth. Now can you get 100 Lira from the 30% who refuse to pay electricity or lay down their weapons? If we give them free electricity for 12hrs then the Leb state damage is less then supplying them 24hrs. We are going to hell indirectly if we are going to provide 24hrs of free electricity to 30% of the state.

lets see..lets not vote for any of these people anymore...lets vote for different politicians , new generation, new ideas new life..these so called protectors of lebanon, r not helping..instead of us sitting on a screen and arguing, about this and that ...lets make a movement and make a change....why should they rule the country for years !!!!!...or khalas we got used to the insult and poverty and lack of work..

a year or two? this guy and his gang have been in power for many years ... what have they done since? promises and threats since 2005 and nothing came through!
I just wish the Lebanese public put them all on trial in the next elections and go by the popular saying: yalli bejareb mjarrab 3a2lo mkharrab

Blame game??? seriously??? you wanna pull that card? watch your grat GMA on Tuesdays and tell me about the blame game ... he is in power and has a majority block ... yet he keeps blaming everyone ... STOP BLAMING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT ... You would not know a decent debate if it hits you in the face

The question that I have always asked: what are the credentials that this Bassil has that make him qualified to be a minister? other than being the SIL of Claoun I can not find any.
I am serious about this question, if anyone has some info about his background I would seriously be interested to know them.

He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in civil engineering, from the American University of Beirut.
