Head of al-Mustaqbal bloc ex-PM Fouad Saniora on Tuesday called for launching national dialogue to discuss Hizbullah's withdrawal from Syria and the deployment of the army on the border between the two countries.

“Moderate and open dialogue is the way to confront problems in Lebanon, but reaching it requires an advanced stance and work,” Saniora said in a televised address.

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora said Lebanon's political process was being slowed down by several obstacles including the use of arms by certain factions.

In remarks to Asharq al-Awsat newspaper published on Friday, Saniora said: “The slowness in the current political process in Lebanon goes back to (many) obstacles, the resort of some (parties) to weapons, and the attempt to use Lebanon as a forum to serve regional and international” policies.

Head of al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora reiterated on Wednesday that Hizbullah should withdraw from the neighboring country Syria before it participates in any cabinet lineup.

“There are only two options either Hizbullah returns from Syria and we agree on a cabinet formation together or a non-political government would be formed and we resume the all-party talks,” Saniora said in comments published in the Kuwaiti al-Rai newspaper.

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora reiterated his call for the formation of a non-political cabinet after he accused Hizbullah of launching an intimidation campaign against the March 14 alliance.

In remarks published in As Safir daily on Saturday, Saniora said Hizbullah should form a cabinet in which the March 8 and 14 alliances would get 9 ministers each and centrists six “if it was able to do so.”

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam denied that he has reached a dead-end and revealed that the March 14 alliance had been mulling to accept a cabinet formula in which it would get veto power along with the March 8 coalition but reversed its decision after fiery statements made by Hizbullah officials.

In remarks to As Safir daily published on Saturday, Salam said a proposal made by Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat to give 9 ministers to March 14, another 9 to March 8 and 6 ministers to centrists in the new cabinet was feasible for March 14.

Al-Mustaqbal bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora condemned on Sunday the attack on residents of a rival neighborhood in the northern city of Tripoli, saying the perpetrators should be brought to justice.

“This heinous crime that targeted Lebanese civilians from Jabal Mohsen only serves Lebanon's enemies and reminds us of the suspicious crimes that it has been recently witnessing,” Saniora said in a statement.

Al-Mustaqbal bloc leader Fouad Saniora visited caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Thursday night, culminating a round of talks he held with the country's top officials following his return from Paris.

Saniora's meetings started on Thursday with President Michel Suleiman as part of a delegation from the southern city of Sidon. He then held talks at his residence with Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel.

Speaker Nabih Berri said the parliamentary administrative and justice committee should learn from the experience of the electoral subcommittee to avoid the same problems that led to the failure to agree on a draft vote law.

In remarks to several local dailies published on Wednesday, Berri said the committee should avoid the mistakes that were made in the past by the subcommittee that was tasked with agreeing on an electoral law.

Speaker Nabih Berri has rejected accusations by al-Mustaqbal bloc leader Fouad Saniora that he was seeking to impose the rule of the parliament on the rest of top institutions in Lebanon, saying he would not allow anyone to paralyze the functions of the legislature.

“It is not natural and it is unacceptable for the legislative authority to become the captive of the mood of the prime minister no matter who he is,” Berri told As Safir newspaper published on Tuesday.

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam is expected to visit the French capital, Paris, where he will hold talks with ex-Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

According to An Nahar newspaper published on Monday, Salam is expected to tackle with Hariri the cabinet formation process.
