The Mustaqbal bloc condemned on Tuesday the recent security developments in Lebanon, especially the kidnapping of seven Estonians in the Bekaa, which it said “are aimed at returning Lebanon to a dark period of its past.”

It added after its weekly meeting in Qoreitem headed by former Prime Minister Fouad Saniora: “Malicious powers are behind these incidents that are aimed at targeting mutual coexistence and destabilizing Lebanon.”

Former Premier Fouad Saniora reportedly said after the 2006 war that he feared Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah would topple the government.

In a WikiLeaks cable dated August 16, 2006, Saniora told then U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman that he was making every effort to deploy the Lebanese army as quick as possible in the south.

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat reportedly said immediately after the end of the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbullah that if the Jewish state pulled out from occupied Lebanese territories, it would abolish an essential pressure point off the Shiite group.

Israel “is speeding up the withdrawal,” Jumblat said during a meeting dated August 15, 2006, according to a WikiLeaks cable published by al-Akhbar newspaper on Thursday.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea has reportedly called for making promises on the Shebaa farms and stressed that disarming Hizbullah was the key to toppling former President Emile Lahoud.

In a WikiLeaks cable published by al-Akhbar daily, Geagea said during a meeting with U.S. diplomats on August 12, 2006 that “Speaker Nabih Berri who is still controlled” by Hizbullah will not be able to support a move to topple Lahoud.

Former Premier Fouad Saniora expected Hizbullah to disappear from the south, saying it couldn’t lie “in the same bed with the Lebanese army and UNIIFL,” said a WikiLeaks cable published by al-Akhbar daily on Monday.

According to the cable, Saniora told ambassadors of the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on August 14, 2006 that he had given Hizbullah a chance “to disarm immediately or after the Israeli withdrawal or hand over its arms to the Lebanese army.”

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan described the memorandum of understanding between Hizbullah and the Free Patriotic Movement as a “mistake”, according to a leaked U.S. Embassy cable published exclusively in Al-Akhbar on Thursday.

He instead suggested that a partnership was necessary between FPM leader MP Michel Aoun and then Prime Minister Fouad Saniora in order to end Lebanon’s political crisis, said the Wikileaks report dated July 14, 2006.

A leaked U.S. Embassy cable published exclusively in Al-Akhbar Thursday revealed that minister Jebran Bassil had informed a U.S. diplomat that Hizbullah intended to take into its own hands the situation of Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails.

The minister said that over a month before the eruption of the July 2006 war, Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had warned national dialogue participants that the party would tackle the case of the Lebanese prisoners and “therefore no one should have been surprised” with the break out the war on July 12.

Marada leader MP Suleiman Franjieh on Thursday congratulated Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on his election and hoped for stronger ties with Bkirki.

“This is the beginning of new relations with Bkirki, and I hope we can cooperate,” Franjieh said after meeting with al-Rahi at the seat of the Maronite church.

Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez has said that Premier-designate Najib Miqati’s government would remain committed to Lebanon’s international obligations.

“My meeting with Miqati was fruitful … He wants to form (the cabinet) in a few days but he is seeking to include in it all forces and the biggest number of political factions in Lebanon,” Jimenez said during a press conference at Bustros Palace on Wednesday night.

A leaked U.S. Embassy cable published exclusively in Al-Akhbar on Tuesday revealed that former Prime Minister Fouad Saniora held Syria and Iran responsible for the eruption of the July 2006 “because they want to destroy the Lebanese government, obstruct the formation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and divert attention from the Iranian nuclear program.”

The cable, dated July 13, 2006, said that Saniora described Hizbullah’s actions as “unforgivable” expressing his understanding that Israel “will not reward the party” by liberating the Shabaa Farms.
