A rocket fired from Gaza hit southern Israel on Friday, the Israeli army said, although there were no reports of casualties or damage.

"A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit the Eshkol area in southern Israel," said the spokesman for the army, adding that it was the first rocket to strike Israeli territory since September 16.

Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil went to the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on Friday, the first such visit by a Lebanese foreign minister to the peacekeeping mission since 1978.

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major-General Luciano Portolano briefed Bassil in Naqoura on the situation in UNIFIL’s area of operations south of the Litani River, said a press release.

Clashes erupted in the West Bank Friday after weekly Muslim prayers while security forces deployed heavily around Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque which reopened following the killing of a Palestinian by police.

Al-Aqsa, in the Old City, and adjacent neighborhoods have seen months of violence, and the mosque compound has been a rallying point for Palestinian resistance to perceived Jewish attempts to take control of it.

Sunni Islam's top institution, al-Azhar, said Israel's closure of the al-Aqsa mosque compound in annexed east Jerusalem on Thursday was a "barbaric" act that fueled religious conflict.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry hit out Thursday at reported insults by an American official against the Israeli prime minister, saying it was "disgraceful, unacceptable and damaging."

Kerry also pledged that the United States would continue to work "quietly and effectively" in order to relaunch the peace process with the Palestinians in a thoughtful and even-handed way, saying it was "doable."

The flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in east Jerusalem, at the heart of the latest tensions in the Holy City, is a highly sensitive site sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

The plaza is a 14-hectare (35-acre) rectangular esplanade at the southeast corner of the Old City which was seized by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move never internationally recognized.
