Autopsy after Palestinian Dies in Israeli Jail

Israeli pathologists were conducting an autopsy Wednesday on the body of a Palestinian prisoner a day after he allegedly hanged himself in jail, a claim rejected by his family and officials.

Israel Prisons Service (IPS) said Tuesday that Raed Abdel Salam al-Jaabari, 35, hanged himself in a bathroom at Eshel prison in southern Israel and died en route to hospital.

Israel Dismantles Provocative New Al-Aqsa Ramp

Israel on Wednesday dismantled a newly erected wooden access ramp to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound that would have increased access for non-Muslims but angered Jordan, an AFP correspondent said.

The half-built structure was erected by Israel in the midst of the Gaza conflict in early August, triggering outrage from Jordan which overseas Muslim heritage sites in Jerusalem.

Israel, US Test Upgraded Arrow 2 Missile Interceptor

Israel and the United States on Tuesday successfully conducted a joint test of an upgraded Arrow 2 ballistic missile interception system over the Mediterranean Sea, the defense ministry said.

"An Arrow 2 missile was launched and performed its flight sequence as planned," the defense ministry said in a statement, with a spokesman confirming the system had been upgraded.

Palestinian Prisoner Dies in Israel Jail

A Palestinian prisoner arrested by Israel in July died Tuesday after what the Israel Prison Authority said was a suicide attempt, a claim denied by the Palestinians.

The Palestinians named the man as Raed Abdel Salam al-Jaabari, 35, and called for an independent probe, describing the circumstances of his death as "mysterious."

HRW: Israel Illegally Coerces Africa Migrants to Leave

Israel has illegally coerced almost 7,000 African migrants into returning to their home countries, where some face persecution, Human Rights Watch said in a report published on Tuesday.

Stray gunfire from Syria wounded an Israeli soldier in the Golan Heights on Monday, the Israeli army said.

"An IDF (Israeli army) soldier was injured by errant fire from internal fighting in Syria. He was evacuated to hospital," an army statement said, without elaborating.
