Lawmakers on Wednesday quoted Speaker Nabih Berri as saying that recent attacks on the army “threaten to drown the country in chaos.”

“Targeting the army for being the unifying institution is the pinnacle of attacks on state institutions and it is a very dangerous development that jeopardizes stability and threatens to drown the country in chaos,” Berri was quoted as saying during his weekly meeting with MPs.

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday urged authorities to uncover the details behind last week's attack against the army in the southern city of Sidon.

“We call for intensifying investigations to reveal what happened in Sidon on Sunday and for prosecuting those who planned the attack,” the bloc said in a released statement after the MPs' weekly meeting, stressing that what happened in the port city is rejected.

President Michel Suleiman contacted on Tuesday French President Francois Hollande to stress Lebanon's commitment to fighting terrorism, most notably in light of Tuesday's blast in the Bekaa region of Baalbek, reported the National News Agency.

Suleiman urged the Lebanese people “to exercise diligence against the repeated attempts to spread violence and terrorism to Lebanon.”

The families of the Lebanese expats besieged in South Sudan urged the caretaker Foreign Minister on Tuesday to help their relatives return to Lebanon, amid intense fighting between rival groups in the African country.

"We call on Adnan Mansour to work hard on retrieving all the Lebanese stuck in (South Sudan's capital) Juba,” the families of the expats said in a released statement.

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun held talks on Monday night with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on latest developments, especially the upcoming presidential elections.

Aoun said: “All Maronite leaders must converge around Bkriki to hold consultations and choose the most appropriate president for Lebanon.”

Several rockets fired from the Lebanese-Syrian border area struck the Hermel region on Tuesday, leaving three people injured, including two soldiers.

"Starting 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, six rockets fired from the Syrian side of the border landed in the town of Hermel, one of them inside an army barracks in the al-Dawra neighborhood, leaving two soldiers lightly wounded and causing material damage," an army statement said.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea lashed out on Tuesday at Hizbullah accusing it of stimulating the Takfiris in Lebanon due to its involvement in the ongoing battles in Syria, calling on the formation of an active and cohesive cabinet.

“The Lebanese people are tolerating the repercussions of Hizbullah's actions in Syria, despite the fact that the party isn't seeking any political or popular cover for its acts,” Geagea said during a ceremony commemorating the late writer and journalist, Nasir al-Assad and artist & Journalist, Pierre Sadek.

Former caretaker Public Works and Transport Minister Ghazi al-Aridi informed President Michel Suleiman about his intention to resign despite his failure to mention the matter to his fellows at the Progressive Socialist Party, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported.

Sources told the daily that Aridi informed Suleiman about his move after the Financial Prosecutor Judge Ali Ibrahim summoned him over a corruption scandal, prompting the president to voice his consensus over the matter.

Italy expressed readiness to train the Lebanese Armed Forces in an attempt to maintain stability in the country, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino revealed the matter during a meeting for the European Union Foreign Affairs Council .

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said the “complicated” situation in Lebanon was exacerbated by the pressure of Syrian refugees fleeing the fighting in their country.

“The situation in Lebanon is very much complicated,” Ban said in his year-end press conference in New York on Monday.
