Around 100 people were killed across Syria as fighting raged in a strategic district of Syria's commercial capital Aleppo on Saturday, the third day of a rebel offensive to seize the city, a watchdog said.

The focal point of combat was Salaheddin, a rebel stronghold on the southwest side of the city where insurgents attacked an army position, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A Saudi charity group will build a container city that can house 10,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey's Kilis province near the border, a Turkish official said Saturday.

The project of the Saudi National Campaign to Support Brothers in Syria is expected to be ready within a month, the official told AFP.

A Syrian shell crashed Friday into a town on the Turkish side of the border, wounding a Turkish national, as fighting raged in a nearby Syrian town, a local official said.

The shell fired from the Syrian border town of Tall al-Abyad landed in Akcakale in the province of Sanliurfa, smashing into the walls of two buildings and slightly wounding one person, governor Celalettin Guvenc told the Anatolia news agency.

The Syrian regime has moved some chemical weapons to safeguard the material as it wages war against rebel forces but the main storage sites for its arsenal remain secure, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Friday.

"There has been some intelligence that with regards to some of these sites there has been some movement ...in order for the Syrians to better secure the chemicals," Panetta told a joint news conference with his Canadian counterpart.

The U.N. Human Rights Council on Friday voted overwhelmingly to extend the mandate of its probe into rights violations in Syria, condemning the "increasing number of massacres" in the country.

Of the council's 47 members, 41 voted in favor of the resolution allowing the Commission of Inquiry to continue its investigation, which began a year ago.

Rebels unleashed an unprecedented barrage of mortar fire against troops in Aleppo after announcing a "decisive" battle for Syria's second city, residents and a watchdog say.

Shells crashed down at a steady rate and clashes were widespread, leaving layers of dust and smoke over Aleppo, according to the residents and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Friday that Iranian Revolutionary Guards are not present in Lebanon, saying that the Lebanese army is keen to safeguard the country.

“We were reassured that the Guards are not present in Lebanon, and the statements concerning their presence were referring to a previous period and they are currently in Syria not in Lebanon,” the PM said in comments published in the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat.

Several thousand Syrian rebels on Thursday afternoon launched what they said would be a decisive battle for control of the strategic northern city of Aleppo.

"Tonight, Aleppo will be ours or we will be defeated," Abu Furat, a rebel commander, told AFP.
