Prime Minister Najib Miqati said on Saturday that the Syrian arrest warrants against former PM Saad Hariri and al-Mustaqbal lawmaker Oqab Saqr are politically motivated and have no legal value.

“These warrant are political and legally void,” Miqati said during a meeting with Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi at the Grand Serail.

Syrian forces assaulted rebel areas southwest of Damascus and insurgents captured large parts of a military school in the north as the nation's conflict entered its 22nd month Saturday, activists said.

Syrian warplanes bombarded the town of Moadamiyat al-Sham, southwest of Damascus, while the army deployed reinforcements and attempted to storm the rebel-held nearly town of Daraya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The residents of the Wadi Khaled town of al-Boqaiaa have fled their homes on Friday as a result of heavy shooting coming from the Syrian side, the National News Agency reported.

"Gunfire from light- and medium-caliber weapons and shells coming from Syria have landed in al-Boqaiaa area of Wadi Khaled near the Lebanese side of the Grand River,” the NNA said.

Thousands of Syrians took to the streets on Friday, criticizing Washington for blacklisting the rebel jihadist group Al-Nusra Front, as regime troops bombed southern districts of Damascus and clashes were reported around two military schools in the north of the country.

The protesters demonstrated under the slogan: "There is no terrorism in Syria except that of Assad."

Head of the Mustaqbal bloc MP Fouad Saniora noted on Friday that Prime Minister Najib Miqati's recent proposal over the resignation of the government does not help ease the political crisis in Lebanon.

He said during a press conference from his Sidon office: “Miqati's proposal does not end the political deadlock, but it only adds new conditions to resolving it.”

Mustaqbal MP Oqab Saqr noted on Friday that Interpol's announcement that it will not deal with the Syrian arrest warrants against him, former Premier Saad Hariri, and Syrian opposition member Louay al-Meqdad is a “heavy blow” to President Bashar Assad and his regime.

He said in a statement: “The announcement was a heavy blow against Assad, the regime, and their Lebanese allies.”

An opposition leader tolerated by the Syrian regime said Friday that the blacklisting of the jihadist Al-Nusra Front by Washington may be used to justify foreign intervention in the country's crisis.

"The question is, why did they (the Americans) put Al-Nusra Front on their list of terror organizations," demanded Qadri Jamil, Syria's deputy prime minister for economic affairs and head of the Popular Front for Change and Liberation, an opposition party tolerated by the regime.

Doing nothing is not an option in Syria, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday as his European Union counterparts pledged to look at "all options" available to support the opposition and civilians.

"Inaction and indifference are not options," said Cameron, whose government has formally recognized a recently formed Syrian opposition coalition.

The German parliament approved by a wide majority on Friday the deployment of Patriot missiles to help Turkey defend its border against conflict-riven Syria as part of a NATO mission.

The vote clears the way for Germany to deploy the missiles to southern Turkey along with up to 400 German soldiers after NATO member state Turkey asked the alliance for help.

The United States will deploy two Patriot missile batteries to Turkey along with 400 troops to help defend its ally against potential threats from neighboring Syria, U.S. officials said Friday.

The move was part of a wider NATO effort to bolster Turkey's air defenses amid growing tension on the Turkish-Syrian border, with Ankara siding with opposition forces battling President Bashar Assad's regime.
