Dear Mr. Miqati,
Of course, you and I know you were not surprised, but merely trying to continue to play to both sides.
During the next few months you will continue to practice intellectual contortions, acrobatic flips, tight rope walking, double talking and all those fun things politicians do to play on both sides of an issue. The problem is Lebanon will definitely come to a point - very soon - where clear choices have to be made very soon. And you will not be able to hide behind your finger anymore…and this will have consequences with those who supported your election.
And, speaking of consequences, I would say with reasonable certainty that you and Safadi, should forget about winning your next election in Tripoli, unless your allies use their weapons to force you on the city as they did to force Jumblat into submission.
Michel Aoun made a bet on Iran/Syria/Hizbollah and against the West. He wants to be president at any cost and saw this alliance as his only viable option. This may work for a short time with some temporary tail wind.
What boggles the mind is how a significant part of Lebanese Christians, who are typically pro-West bought Aoun's garbage hook, line and sinker?
Shame on the Arab League for their silence and complicity. Shame on Russia and China for protecting this criminal regime in the U.N. Security Council. My heart goes out to the brave people of Syria for standing up to this criminal thug and his clique...
Here’s a list of what you found “acceptable under Hariri,” but perhaps you now have second thoughts after the coup:
• The Parliament was shut down at the whim of one person…you
• A group of thugs with back shirts and guns took over the streets of Beirut and terrorized the country into submission
• A group of thugs occupied Beirut central square, causing insurmountable economic damage to regular Lebanese citizens
• The minority paralyzed the functions of the government at every turn preventing even the simplest actions to move the country forward
• Your TV station announcers, who I suppose speak for your true feelings, joked while the camera was rolling about the assassination of a key figure in M14
The list is too long to capture here, but you found them all acceptable.
Mr. Berri, you strike me as a transparently unprincipled person…
Spare us your false self righteousness.
The new Hizbollah government and Bashar's representatives in Lebanon better not get in the middle by giving banking aid to the Syrian regime criminals to circumvent the sanctions. This will have horrible consequences on Lebanon and will hurt many Lebanese.
Nothing actually changed in Lebanon for the last few years. The same people who took the country hostage with Iranian weapons, black shirts, and a promise of Wilayet al Faquih have been formally anointed. Michel Aoun and other fleas don't really matter.
For those who now gloat because Lebanese government is becoming an international pariah, enjoy this temporary dark reality your masters in Iran have arranged. However, you may want to temper your sophomoric celebrations by having enough foresight to realize that Iran, like Syria is doing now, will change and you'll be left holding the proverbial bag.
And, like Syria and Iran, this new government will soon find itself in the vice grip of sanctions should they decide to wonder off the international norms.
Hizbollah is a terrorist group and their weapons are illegal. They will be brought to justice for assassinating Lebanese patriots. They will be brought to justice for massacres they committed back in the 80's. Nasrallah, it took justice a few years, but we got Bin Laden. Your time has cometh.
Hizbollah is extremely nervous about their supply lines in Syria and in fact they are starting to move weapon cashes from Syria to Lebanon. It is without a doubt they have been supporting the Assad regime (in rhetoric and tactics) and are playing a major role in shooting at unarmed Syrian civilians to quash the Syrian uprising as Iran did to theirs.
We all know how this will go down. Like it or not, STL will happen and Hezbollah's turn is coming (Aoun and all the other gnats don't really matter and are inconsequential). Ask Bin Laden, Milosevic, Mladic, Hitler, and all those who thought they can escape international justice. Like Hasan Nasrallah, these criminals all lived in bunkers for a while before they met their unavoidable fate. The only question is while the wheels of justice turn, how much misery will Hezbollah cause the Lebanese in trying to evade the inevitable?
