74% of "eligible voters"... which means is 11million voted from approx 14million eligible voters of the 24 million syrians. If the regime forces control 70% of the populated areas, those that left syria illegally or the 30% living under ISIS or Al NUsra and the islamic front can't vote.
There is no national opposition or coalition or FSA.This is just a turkish soap opera that begs for money. Has no support or any influence on the ground in syria. So reality is... The jihadist, al nusra and the islamic front (allied with al Qaida) or ISIS (too extreme for al Qaida).... or the Assad Regime.
You cant keep living in denial. this is the reality on the ground. the rest of the world knows it's over.
"We Arabs" have nothing to do with Egypt or Saudi Arabia or the gulf Arabs. Nor is there anything in common with Morocco or Algeria. Use of a common alphabet (which is all we have in common) does not mean we can generalise that all people of the Middle East are incapable of democracy. Just means that western style democracy is not a one size fits all.
We read and write a common language but we speak a dialect that is incomprehensible with the people of the gulf, Iraq, Egypt or the North Saharan. Except Tunisian, Lebanese is only similar to the other Levantine peoples of Syria and Palestine. Our culture, food and art is only similar to that of our neighbours in the levant and nothing with Oman or Qatar or ksa. Imagine our lifestyle like the Saudis?
Point is democracy is ever evolving and fits differently with the culture and sophistication of the people. Wasn't long ago that women and coloured people weren't allowed to vote in the USA or Jews and gypsies in areas of Europe a few decades ago.
What happened to retirement? Where is Taymour and his opinion of things?
Every day we are hearing this guy nowadays. Hariri has a chance to avenge what Jumblatt did to him as pm. Agree with aoun on the presidency and make this guy as irrelevant as he should be.
I agree wolf. Remember Lebanon when General found chehab was president. Lebanon prospered through the Arab Abdul Nasser turmoil. He controlled and restricted Palestinians during their height of financial and military support against Lebanon. Unfortunately president suliman frangieh disintegrated most of his intelegiance and security institutions which then eventually led to the 75 war.
Lebanon needs to close ranks under a military government that removes sectarian politics. Like what Ataturk did after ww1 with the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Change the alphabet to the phonetic alphabet, identify ourselves as Lebanese and not Arabs or our sect. There is a bigger movement happening in the Middle East that we must unite against.
Check out the map of the "new Middle East" that dick Cheney help draw up in 1996 as the president of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) before becoming vice president. He also the president of Halliburton, the main private contractor to benefit from Iraq.

We need a strong independent national identity in the Middle East. This can't happen under the current sectarian political system
Palestinians and Syrians supported by fringe extremist Sunni Lebanese... Déjà vu for Lebanon 40 years later. No lessons learnt. This is the result of an education system that ignores history and political amnesia.
