"PS: I would have liked to see one of those hypocrites attend the condolences of any of the 48.644 innocent Afghans or 1.690.903 Iraqis that they killed in the name of their oilycracy."
You forgot the millions of other victims of the U.S./French sponsored wars around the World through out modern history, and their concurrent sponsorship of dictators in South America and as well as our neighborhood (Saudi etc.), but let's not go there yet.. how about their positions on the plight of the Palestinian people next door, and their continued support for Israel against the Lebanese people? Now they are on the side the Syrian people for the sake of their freedom? Does anyone buy that?
@thepatriot: This competition about "Safe Guarding the rights of Christians" is good, very good, for the Christians and for all Lebanon, but people like Geagea and others in M14 have produced only negative results in that area. Their followers have been isolated and they themselves are now reduced to secretaries of an incompetent secretary in the Saudi royal palace, while Aoun is in control of the government.
@slash: I am not defending any regime. I am pointing out the hypocrisy of the West with respect to this condolences visit and with respect for their so-called support for freedom in Syria and the "Arab Spring" in general. The reason the Arab (an in fact the rest of the Third World is in this misery) is because of their actions. Now they say they want to help the peoples in the area, while in fact all they are trying to do is steal the freedom movements in order to preserve their interests and continue their control. Look what is happening in Egypt (they haven't succeeded yet in trying to steal the revolution, but they are trying every day), and look at their hypocrisy in Yemen and Bahrain. I have every right to doubt their motives in Syria, and I don't think if they succeed it will be in the best interest of the Syrian people, Lebanon or anyone other than Israel and their own.
Guns have nothing to do with this. The gun that was used was a hunting gun, a semi-automatic one that is supposed to be used for duck hunting etc. Guns are not the issue here. The murderer would have used a machete or a butcher knife had he not have access to a gun.
To make a long story short, the Patriarch has taken the strategic position that it is in the long term interest of the Maronites and the Christians at large, who constitute a minority in this intolerant Sunni Arab World, to ally themselves with other minorities who are suffering from the Sunni hegemony and intolerance and to form together a unified front to resist those who are trying to eliminate them.
The Vatican endorses this position.
Unfortunately, some other Maronites/Christians have chosen to be a feather in the wings or Arabism and Sunnism.
