"Christian Figures Prepare ‘Arab Spring’ Principles to Respond to al-Rahi". Great headline, particularly if we replace the word "Figures" by "Puppets" or "Dummies".
@min-canada: Gaddhafi, like Saddam, were not placed in power by the West but in their last several years they had become 100% pro-West and this is what allowed the West to have leverage on them. The regimes were "owned" by the West so they did not enjoy support from Russia and China. Today Syria has full support from Russia/China.
Yes, PEOPLE can change regimes, but NOT Sarkozy, Obama et al. Gaddhafi was ousted by his people; but if the majority of the people were not against the regime, the West could have done nothing. The West has been trying for 33 years to change the regime in Iran, and they have failed each time because the regime enjoys an overwhelming support from its people. In Syria, there is opposition but this opposition is sectarian-- mainly controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. A large chunk of the population (The Christians, the Alaouis, and the Sunni Elite) support the regime.
The bottom line is that although Assad may not be staying for ever, his departure is not as imminent as Sarkozy wishes or likes to portray. I agree that chances are that when Sarkozy's term ends, Assad will be still in power.
