Snow Blocks More than 1,000 People on Serbian Road

More than 1,000 people were rescued by the army and emergency services on Saturday after being stranded in snow on a road linking Serbia and Hungary for some 15 hours.

More than 200 vehicles were caught by the weather and trapped for several hours from Friday evening in the region of Feketic, some 120 kilometers (74 miles) north of Belgrade.

Top Nazi War Crimes Suspect Hungarian Laszlo Csatari Dead

Laszlo Csatari, a 98-year-old Hungarian who topped the Simon Wiesenthal Center's list of alleged Nazi war criminals, has died in hospital, his lawyer said Monday.

"He died on Saturday morning, he had been treated for medical issues for some time but contracted pneumonia, from which he died," lawyer Gabor Horvath said.

Hungarian police began evacuating around 10,000 people in the central city of Szekesfehervar on Thursday after a World War II bomb was discovered next to a kindergarten.

The 100-kilogram (220 pounds) Soviet-made bomb was found near a kindergarten sandpit in a densely populated housing estate in the city of 100,000 people, some 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Budapest.
