Lithuania confirmed its first case of the novel coronavirus in a woman who returned from Italy, the government said on Friday. 

Conservative ex-finance minister Ingrida Simonyte won a paper-thin victory over political novice Gitanas Nauseda in round one of Lithuania's presidential election on Sunday, sending both to a tight May 26 run-off set to focus on inequality and poverty in the Baltic eurozone state.

A Lithuanian national has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for spying on Moscow, Russia's security service said on Wednesday.

Yevgeny Mataitis, who also has Russian citizenship, was arrested in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad last year for allegedly sharing military intelligence with Lithuania.

A Russian court on Thursday arrested a dual Russian-Lithuanian national on treason charges, in a classified case whose details remain unknown.

"Yevgeny Mataitis has been arrested today by the Lefortovo District Court" on charges of state treason, court spokeswoman Yulia Skotnikova told AFP.

Lithuania on Tuesday located a missing private plane at the bottom of the Baltic sea, but its two pilots were nowhere to be found, the Baltic state's defense ministry said. 

"There were no bodies in the aircraft so we're continuing our search," defense ministry spokesman Vaidotas Linkus told AFP.

Lithuania said Sunday it was searching for a small private plane with two pilots on board, that went missing over the Baltic Sea while en route from Sweden.

Despite an international search since Saturday evening, no trace has yet been found of the Polish-made An-2 civilian aircraft, the Baltic state's navy said.

Lithuanian prosecutors said Monday they had detained a Russian citizen suspected of spying, in the latest Cold War-style incident as tensions spiral between the West and Russia.

The suspect is a Russian FSB security service agent who sought to "penetrate governing institutions, law-enforcement and intelligence services," the prosecutor's office said.
