Syria's Assad Makes Rare Public Visit to Power Plant

Syria's President Bashar Assad made a rare public visit on Wednesday to an electrical plant in central Damascus to mark Labor Day, the presidency's official Facebook page said.

"President Assad is now visiting the Umayyad electrical plant in Tishreen Garden in Damascus and congratulates its workers and Syria's workers on their holiday," the Facebook page said.

Netanyahu: Root of Palestinian Conflict 'Not Territorial'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that an Israeli withdrawal would not bring peace with the Palestinians because the heart of the conflict was their refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Four Anti-Qaida Fighters among 8 Killed by Iraq Bombs

Two bomb attacks in Iraq on Wednesday killed eight people, including four anti-Qaida fighters who died when a suicide bomber struck as they gathered to collect their salaries, officials said.

The bomber, who was on foot, detonated explosives at a police station in Fallujah, west of Baghdad, as the militiamen, known as Sahwa, gathered near a police station, police Lieutenant Colonel Khaled Yassir al-Jumaili said.

Israel Will Not Talk on Basis of 1967 Lines, Says Minister

Israel will keep refusing to negotiate on the basis of a total withdrawal from land it seized during the 1967 Six-Day War, a minister said Wednesday after the Arab League modified its peace plan.

"If Israel agrees to come to the negotiating table while accepting in advance that talks would be held on the basis of the 1967 lines, there wouldn't be very much to negotiate about," said Gilad Erdan, a minister in the security cabinet and considered close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Flash Floods in Saudi Kill 16

Sixteen people have died and three more are missing in Saudi Arabia after downpours caused flash floods in several areas of the desert kingdom, the civil defense authorities said on Wednesday.

Two others died in flash floods in neighboring Oman, local media reported, as cloudbursts swept across most Gulf countries.

Syrian Envoy: Chemical Weapons Can't be Tolerated

Syria's U.N. ambassador said Tuesday that the use of chemical weapons is not only "a red line" but "a blood line" that cannot be tolerated and again demanded a U.N. investigation of an alleged chemical weapons attack in Aleppo that it blames on rebels.

Bashar Ja'afari said at a news conference that his government has bodies and other proof that chemical weapons were used in Khan al-Assad in Aleppo on March 19 and it wants this incident investigated first. The rebels blame the government for the attack.

Bouteflika 'Reassures' Algerians from Hospital

Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, hospitalised in France at the weekend after suffering a mini-stroke, reassured Algerians on Tuesday about the state of his health, national media reported.

"It is very difficult for me, when I find myself in hospital abroad, not to be beside the Algerian people to celebrate Labour Day and attend the finals of the Algerian football cup and military football cup," he was quoted as saying by the APS news agency.

Kerry Hails Arab Shift on Land Swaps as 'Big Step'

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday hailed a shift in the Arab League position to accept for the first time the idea of land swaps between the Palestinians and Israelis in any peace deal.

Kerry said the Arab League had said it could accept Israel's 1967 borders "with adjustments to reflect mutually agreed upon land swaps recognizing some of the changes that have taken place. That is a very big step forward."

Jordan Warns U.N. of 'Crushing Weight' of Syria Refugees

Jordan on Tuesday warned the U.N. Security Council that the growing exodus of Syrian refugees was a threat to its stability and the council is now considering a visit to the camps.

Six Tunisian Soldiers Wounded in 'Terrorist' Hunt

Land mines wounded six soldiers and police in western Tunisia on Tuesday as security forces continued a search for "terrorists" that has already caused casualties, the interior ministry said.

Two men were seriously wounded by Tuesday's explosions, the ministry said without elaborating, a day after a soldier and a member of the national guard each lost a leg in similar blasts and another was seriously hurt in the eyes.
