A Lebanese, who was kidnapped in Mozambique in southeast Africa, was released on Wednesday a day after his abduction.

Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil announced via Twitter that the man was released without the payment of a ransom.

Mozambique's president and a rebel leader signed a landmark peace deal in Maputo on Friday, ending a two-year conflict that has rekindled memories of the country's brutal civil war.

President Armando Guebuza and Mozambican rebel Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, who came out of hiding Thursday, signed the deal in front of around 100 diplomats and dignitaries, an AFP reporter witnessed.

Mozambique rebel movement Renamo's agreement to a ceasefire is seen as aimed at keeping its political aspirations alive ahead of national and presidential elections on October 15.

Mozambique's opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama hinted on Thursday his party would take part in October elections without signing a full accord with the government if there is a halt to fighting.

The Renamo leader spoke via satellite phone to journalists in Maputo from his hideout in the remote Gorongosa mountains, where he has been holed up since fighting broke out between his forces and government troops late last year.

Mozambique's ruling party presidential candidate Felipe Nyusi on Wednesday made a plea for peace with the opposition Renamo party, which has launched a new insurgency in the southern African nation.

Nyusi, 55, appearing alongside President Armando Guebuza at a rally in the village of Buzi in the conflict-hit central Sofala province, pledged "continuity" with the policies of the outgoing president.

Police arrested a senior member of Mozambique's opposition party Renamo as he left peace talks at the president's office Monday, a party official said.

Renamo's spokesman Antonio Muchunga had been invited to the presidency as a member of a state council charged with resolving escalating political and military tensions between the party and the government. 

Mozambique's revived rebel movement Renamo has called off a truce with government forces, warning Thursday that armed attacks would spread from the main north-south highway across the country.

"Across the entire national territory, there is no more ceasefire," said the group's spokesman Antonio Muchanga, amid reports of strikes against vehicles traveling in central province Sofala.

Mozambican opposition party Renamo warned Wednesday that the country risked even greater military conflict if government troops advanced any closer to the mountain hideout of its leader, Afonso Dhlakama.

Renamo, which claims the government has moved more troops to the central Gorongosa mountains for an assault on Dhlakama's position, says it wants them moved back.

Mozambican rebel group Renamo said Thursday it had reached an understanding with the government to integrate its fighters into the national army and police under the supervision of international observers.

Renamo spokesman Adriano Muchunga said international military experts would help identify eligible guerrillas to join the security forces in a bid to end fighting that has flared up again two decades after the end of the country's 16-year civil war.

Flooding has struck parts of southern Mozambique prompting authorities on Monday to call on people to evacuate.

The 3 Fevereiro village near the Incomati river basin, in the district of Manhica is one of the affected areas.
