At 60, Newport Jazz Fest Looks to the Future

Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein is more interested in where jazz is going than in where it's been as he marks the 60th anniversary of the granddaddy of all outdoor jazz festivals.

That's why the 88-year-old Wein is celebrating the milestone by adding a third day of music at Fort Adams Park on Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay dedicated to emerging artists such as trumpeter Amir ElSaffar's Middle Eastern-influenced quintet, the jazz-funk-rock band Snarky Puppy and Darcy James Argue's Secret Society.

10,000 Fans Attend Newport Folk Festival

Blue skies and strong ticket sales blessed this year's Newport Folk Festival, two days of veteran acts and up-and-comers from a variety of musical genres.

An estimated 10,000 people attended the long-running festival Sunday at Fort Adams State Park, and they were treated to performances from Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Wanda Jackson and more than a dozen other acts on three stages set around Newport's historic fort.

'Predatory' Cigarette Marketing to U.S. Black Youth

Menthol cigarettes are marketed to African-American youths in a "predatory" manner through more ads and lower prices near California high schools, said a U.S. study released on Friday.

Researchers at Stanford University said their findings, published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research, show that menthol cigarette makers are aiming to get young people addicted and are harming the nation's health.
