Arab League to Discuss Failed Palestinian U.N. Bid Jan. 15

The Arab League is to meet January 15 to discuss the failed Palestinian at the United Nations Security Council aimed at ending Israel's occupation, an official said Wednesday.

On December 30, the U.N. Security Council rejected a draft resolution that would have set a 12-month deadline for Israel to finalize a peace deal with the Palestinians and then fully withdraw its troops from the Palestinian territories by late 2017.

EU Criticizes Israel on Palestinian Tax Freeze

The EU criticized Tuesday Israel's decision to freeze Palestinian Authority tax revenues in retaliation for joining the International Criminal Court and called on both sides to avoid steps that could undermine peace efforts.

Palestinian Gets 3 Life Terms for Murder of Israeli Teens

An Israeli military court on Tuesday handed three life sentences to a Palestinian militant convicted of organizing the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers.

Hossam Qawasme was also ordered to pay 250,000 shekels ($63,000/53,000 euros) in compensation to each of the three families at a hearing at Ofer military court near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

W. Bank Settlers Suspected in Stoning of U.S. Diplomatic Cars

Jewish settlers pelted a U.S. diplomatic convoy with stones Friday as envoys tried to visit the West Bank to investigate a complaint by Palestinian farmers over vandalism of olive trees, officials said.

A State Department spokesman in Washington said U.S. authorities were "deeply concerned" about the incident but said no one was hurt and the American security team had not drawn their weapons.

Egypt Border Guards Shoot Dead Gazan

Egyptian soldiers firing from across the border shot dead a Palestinian man in the Gaza frontier town of Rafah on Friday, medics said, although the motive was not immediately known.

The border troops shot the 23-year-old man "in the back and the bullet settled in the heart. He died on the spot," emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told Agence France-Presse.

Palestinians Present ICC Membership Request to U.N.

The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations on Friday formally requested membership in the International Criminal Court, which would allow war crimes complaints to be filed against Israel.

Membership of the Rome Statute, which governs the ICC, would open the way for Palestinians to pursue criminal complaints in The Hague, but is firmly opposed by both Israel and the United States.
