Movie Review: Gravity (2013)

Every now and again, we're treated to a truly miraculous movie-going experience; a film that transcends genre or demographics and appeals to the film fan in all of us. "Gravity" is one of those movies. It's a masterfully directed love-letter to cinema, and you owe it to yourself to watch it; but not just watch it, but experience it the way it was intended to be experienced; on a massive screen, and in glorious 3D.

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also helmed "Children of Men" (one of my favorite movies), "Gravity" is one of the most beautiful and technically impressive films every put on screen. It’s like "Cast Away", "Life of Pi", and "2001: A Space Odyssey" had a threesome that miraculously led to a baby, and that baby was "Gravity". I'm going to refrain from discussing anything about the plot because I want to reveal as little as possible, but know that the effects are here to serve the story, not just to look pretty.

Remember that amazing care chase scene in "Children of Men"? It was about 4 minutes long and was basically one uncut, uninterrupted shot. Gravity is pretty much an hour and a half of that, which is amazing. The effects are some of the best I’ve ever seen, and the 3D is used to such great effect that it would be a massive shame to watch it in 2D. Seriously, "Gravity" is worth the IMAX and 3D premiums, without a doubt.

The performances are amazing; Sandra Bullock absolutely kills it as Ryan Stone, and George Clooney does a fantastic job as Matt Kowalski. But it’s Cuarón's direction that ultimately makes this movie worthwhile. It’s crafted with such care and attention to detail, and I personally can’t wait to watch it again. He's totally getting the Oscar for best director.

Composer Steven Price has also managed to create one of the most haunting and beautiful scores that I've heard in a long time. He perfectly captures the sense of loneliness and despair that one would feel while floating alone in space, and it elevates every scene to another level. The movie has great production values overall, from the groundbreaking effects, to the amazing sound mixing, to the beautiful cinematography.

Anthony's Verdict:

Hauntingly beautiful and masterfully executed, "Gravity" is one of the greatest films ever made, period. If you were only going to watch one movie this year, make sure it's this one.

Numerical Score: 10/10
