Movie Review: About Last Night (2014)

Night” is the third 80′s remake coming out just in time for Valentine’s Day weekend. We’ve already had “RoboCop” (which was cool) and “Endless Love” (which really wasn’t), so how did the weekend’s final remake turn out? Not too bad, actually.

A remake of the 1986 film of the same name – which was based on David Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago – the film follows two vastly different couples as they begin to cozy up to one another. Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Joan (Regina Hall) are the first to get together, and through a double/blind date, they inadvertently set up their best friends Danny (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant). We follow them as they fall in and out of love and try to understand this whole “relationship” thing, and it can be pretty funny, if not all that impressive.

What works about the flick is Bernie and Joan’s absolutely insane relationship. They’re always hollering at each other, making scenes in public places, and having really strange sex – a scene with a chicken mask really drives that idea home. Danny and Debbie, on the other hand, are way less interesting to watch, and their scenes make the movie drag a little bit. What’s interesting is that as the two begin to get bored of their relationship, so does the audience. Maybe it’s director Steve Pink’s elaborate way of saying that traditional relationships can be pretty boring? Whatever the case, the movie springs back to life any time Kevin Hart and Regina Hall show up on screen.

Kevin Hart has been steadily becoming a bankable film star, and he’s allowed to really show some range in “About Last Night.” This isn’t the bumbling buffoon who was trying to solve a case in “Ride Along”, although definitely expect some goofiness. Regina Hall is great as well and is the perfect match for Hart. Their scenes together are a pleasure to watch, and are ultimately the biggest reason to see this flick. Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant deliver strong performances, but given that their characters just aren’t that interesting, there’s only so much they can do with the roles.

The Verdict:

“About Last Night” is a funny-enough romantic comedy that has its fair share of memorable moments. It’s flawed and can drag from time to time, but It’s bolstered by two hilarious performances courtesy of Kevin Hart and Regina Hall,

Numerical Score: 6.5/10
