U.S. Orders Aircraft Carrier into Gulf over Iraq Crisis

The United States has ordered an aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, into the Gulf in response to the crisis in Iraq, the Pentagon said Saturday.

"The order will provide the commander-in-chief additional flexibility should military options be required to protect American lives, citizens and interests in Iraq," Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said.

Ordered by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, the move comes amid calls for air strikes to blunt a lightning offensive by Sunni Islamic militants that threatens Baghdad and the country's Shiite-led government.

U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday the United States would not send in U.S. ground troops but that he was weighing all other options.

The Bush is being accompanied by two other warships -- the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun, Kirby said in a statement.

The carrier's movement into the Gulf from the north Arabian Sea was expected to be completed by the end of the day, he said.

"American naval presence in the Arabian Gulf continues to support our longstanding commitments to the security and stability of the region," he added.

Morpheus,

Maliki has been a disaster for all the Iraqis, Shia, Sunni, Kurd, Christian etc. but ISIS is not the solution. It is part of the sick sectarian culture that has taken over the region. Well intentioned at its beginning, Arab Nationalism has committed suicide and what we are left with is sectarian extremism everywhere.
We have shunned rational government based on democracy, freedom and human rights labeling it "Western culture" when in fact it is a universal system the foundations of which grew in our part of the world.
Secular democracy is not a perfect system but has been the best for any society that adopted it whether in Asia, Latin America, Turkey, Africa, Turkey, etc.
As long as we reject the rules of democracy, we will remain in our Middle Ages. Civil war and extreme violence is never the solution.

Morpheus/Abubakr,

I understand your cry against injustice but do not let the thieves like Maliki, the extremists like Khamanei or the power hungry like Nasrallah bring you down to their level.
Take the "red pill" of truth and don't buy their "blue pill" of lies. Stay human.

Well said. Also, is it a coincident that, for the most part, Iran is conflict free while Syria and now Iraq are exploding? The Persians have done a good job inciting the Arabs to kill each other while they build up their nuclear technology, etc. The fact is that Iran has been with Maliki and guiding him, if you would call that, from the beginning. Maliki has become Iran's tool and Iraq's stooge. If you were the U.S., would you give Maliki a hand?

I think the so called Sunni leaders are their own worst enemies for funding these terrorists and not taking the garbage out. Your argument that "the world is against Sunnis" is not based on a true premise. If we ask why that is, your conclusion fails. Just look and Kurdistan and Tunisia where the politicians finally realized that they can't rule from a sectarian platform and the logical thing to do is to share power.

are we sure the US is going to stike the sunnis, or it is a reminder to iran they have to properly share the power?

I suggest we wait and see.
