Tension in Bab al-Tabbaneh as Residents Protest over 'Army, Hizbullah Bombing of Arsal'

Several people rallied on Monday in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood of the northern city of Tripoli to protest what they considered the “army and Hizbullah's shelling” of the eastern border region of Arsal.

The protesters' march took off near Tripoli's Harba mosque and they roamed streets surrounding Bab al-Tabbaneh, arriving at the northern city's Abou Ali roundabout, the state-run National News Agency reported.

They shouted slogans criticizing the bombing of Arsal “by the army and Hizbullah.”

Protesters tried to block the main streets linking Tripoli to the northern city of Akkar, but army troops interfered using tear bombs and prevented them from executing their plan, the NNA noted.

The army then closed the international road at the Abou Ali roundabout, and diverted traffic in the area towards the seaside road.

Later in the evening, tension soared in the Tripoli neighborhood as media outlets reported clashes between the army and the protesters.

MTV said a hand grenade was hurled near an army post at the Abou Ali roundabout, adding that reports said one soldier was wounded in the incident.

Arsal has been the scene of deadly clashes between army troops and Syrian gunmen since Saturday. The battles resulted in the death of 14 soldiers and the injury of over 85 others, while five civilians were reportedly killed as well. Twenty-two troops, meanwhile, have gone missing, according to a communique released by the military institution.

The battles started after the arrest of a Syrian man accused of being a top leader of al-Qaida's Syrian branch al-Nusra Front. Following his arrest, gunmen surrounded army posts before opening fire, sparking the clashes.

Tripoli is nothing but a hub of terrorism.

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 21:13

Aren't they ashamed? Young Lebanese soldiers from all sects are dying for their country fighting a bunch of terrorists and they are protesting? Idiots.
Having said that, they have the right to protest. This is what democracy is all about. Better than going underground and blowing up the place.

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 21:48

You are right. These guys are waving the flag of ISIS. This is crazy! But we don't want Tripoli to become another Hama or Homs because of these uneducated poor people with no future. Extremism ate them up and this is going to lead to a major disaster in Tripoli.

They are brainwashed, having nothing to lose, no hope, no future... poverty is the fuel of extremism.

The ISIS flag should be outlawed and so should any support public or private. Long Live Lebanon.

Why arrest them? just shoot to kill...

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 21:54

Shoot to kill is a disastrous solution. That is what they want. The more you kill protesters, the more extremist jihadists you create. Better to flood the protests with truck loads of porc and wild boar. And then spray them with whisky instead of water.

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 21:56

You are a fanatic Flamethrower. A regular Nouri Al Maliki. You want to create a sectarian conflict??? Are you Israeli or what?

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 21:59

Actually I am confused there is _.Flamethrower and _Flamtrow@? Do you use several accounts? Is this what the Mossad teaches you to do? You want the Lebanese to kill one another so you can relax in Tel Aviv?

Thumb Machia 04 August 2014, 22:02

You are as much a terrorist as those protestors. You are inciting sectarian hatred and you should be reported.

Death to these non-lebanese terrorists. I don't care what sect they might come from, but our sect is Lebanon, and no will come before that.

haboub, whos indoctrinated ? Saado by Saudis or Nasralo by Iranians ?
Did Saado claim he wants wilayat faqih or khilafah ? Tell us ya kadab ya munafiq ? Why do shias go and work in ksa, qatar and kuwait if those are sectarian wahabis ? why dont they go to democratic iran ? Why did shia lebanese accept khaliji money to rebuild jnoub ?

Gents, the flag they are raising is the flag of Islam not ISIS. The flag says "La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad Rasulullah".

its ISIS mkraad. ill miss kanafe in tripoli - the city is not what it used to be. its a giant terror cell that resembles Kandahar, not a town in lebanon. tripoli and akkar are gone. so sad. no muslim, no christian, is safe, we are all kaffer in the the eye of isis.
