Qahwaji Meets Roukoz over Lunch, FPM Lawmaker Downplays Move

W460

A lunch meeting on Thursday gathered Army chief General Jean Qahwaji and Commando Regiment commander Brig. Gen. Chamel Roukoz, several TV networks and newspapers reported.

The meeting took place at a restaurant in downtown Beirut, the reports said.

LBCI television said the two generals did not tackle the thorny issue of security and military appointments.

It also said that the meeting had been scheduled 48 hours prior to its occurrence.

In remarks to Akhbar al-Yawm news agency, MP Ziad Aswad of the Free Patriotic Movement said “these social ties are not of concern to the FPM and its policies.”

“The FPM's objections are not targeted against certain individuals, but are rather aimed at ensuring the regularity of the rotation of power in all institutions,” said Aswad.

Defense Minister Samir Moqbel has recently extended the the terms of the army commander, chief of staff and the head of the Higher Defense Council despite months of objections by the FPM, which rejects the extension of the tenures of high-ranking military and security officials.

Prior to Qahwaji's term extension, Aoun was reportedly lobbying for political consensus on the appointment of Roukoz, his son-in-law, as army chief.

The Qahwaji-Roukoz meeting comes a day after FPM supporters held street protests against what Aoun terms as the violation of the rights of Christians as well as Moqbel's decision to extend the tenures of the top three military officers.

By the way, from another thread:

Roukoz should be careful. I am sure Michel Sulieman had lunch with Francois Hajj before Hajj was assassinated.

The price for being President is that you must kill a successor that is better than you.

True Lebanese, you're reading too many Tom Clancy novels, Qahwaji is not like that if you did not know.

(1). At a time when the Lebanese Army is having to fight on several fronts and having to ensure the contiguity of Lebanon, the very last thing anyone should do is to create wedges between its top brass, this is not the time, the army's morale should not be tampered with. Both Qahwaji and Roukoz are doing miracles in defeating terrorism, the army has been getting better, its cohesion is encouraging friendly nations to bolster its capacities and this is because the army is mainly showing 2 things, cohesion and courage. Aoun is a dirty filthy traitor, it is this noble institution that is always his target, if Aoun divides and demoralizes the army, the sole guarantor of Lebanon's survival, then Lebanon is done and over with.

(2). Let the Lebanese awaken now and beware of Aoun's latest gambit and dirty trick, today we can still wake up in our beds and go to work, travel and return, enjoy life, but the day the army falters, then Lebanon is gone and Hezbollah can do zilch to protect anyone, even in Syria it can't hold on but little patches of land here and there. Let no one fall for Aoun's evil, this time he is aiming at giving us the Coup De grace. he has paralyzed almost all of our institutions, Lebanon is still standing despite all his attempts and Hezbollah's to destroy Lebanon, now he is trying to hit the army from its very head. Let's leave the army in peace if we want to enjoy peace, Aoun cannot guarantee peace, we've seen what he does when he commands.

Vous avez parfaitement raison cela évitera au Liban beaucoup de déboires dans le futur.

Both General Qahwaji and General Roukoz are excellent Generals and servants of the LAF, and they do us all very proud. Its a shame they are caught up in the dirty Lebanese politics! God bless the Lebanese Armed Forces... The Watan! The true protectors of all Lebanon!
