Officer Abbas Jomaa died at dawn on Monday from wounds he sustained during clashes with wanted suspects al-Ghobairi neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs.

He was laid to rest during an official funeral that was attended by a number of political and military officials.

The army commander's representative General Hassan Yassine praised at the funeral the deceased's loyalty to the army and his determination to perform his military duty.

From the moment they become part of the army, members of the military institution are dedicated to their country and its people, he added.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati also offered his condolences over Jomaa's death, saying: “Whenever the nation is in danger, all the Lebanese people find safe haven with the army, which defends their country's sovereignty, stability, and peace.”

Jomaa was critically wounded on Friday during clashes in al-Ghobairi as the army was conducting a raid in the area to apprehend a suspect, Hassan Karaki, also known as Antar.

The army came under fire by a number of gunmen during the operation, but it eventually succeeded in apprehending Karaki on Saturday.

blatant sectarianism, you right-wingers are an interesting bunch. Just curious, is it Shiites that bomb churches and kill Christians or is it your Wahabi/Salafi friends? Ahh the irony, reminds me why you've become politically insignificant. Show some respect to a LEBANESE ARMY OFFICER, this is not a religious issue, too bad you guys are blinded y your fanaticism.

This is how your sectarian mind sees things. Would you said the same thing if a Lebanese Christian kills a Christian Lebanese officer?

R.I.P. He gave his life for the sake of the greater good. We should all observe a minute of silence in his memory and his sacrifice.
